Hello folks, thanks for your welcome. I've just upgraded from a simple point-and-shoot jobby to an NX 1000 and it's really whet my appetite to get back into photography. Your forum was a lucky find.

Hello
Hello all, my name is Michael and i live in Manchester, UK.
Recently i bought a Sony RX-100 as a second, everyday camera to my Canon DSLR. I wanted to get back to the days when i used to carry a very compact 35mm camera everywhere with me on those occasions when my 35mm SLR stayed at home.
I do own a Panasonic DMC-FS11, which has served as a holiday camera for a couple of years and it is OK, but suffers the usual image quality limitations of cheaper digital compacts – it is frustrating to accidently take a real “keeper” on holiday then when you get it up onto a 23” monitor back home you start to really notice the lens distortions, colour fringes and small sensor limitations.
I did look at 4/3rds and other serious compacts, but had decided against them purely on grounds of size - if it won’t fit in my pocket, then it won’t go everywhere with me and so won’t really get used.
This might seem a bit petty, but i had a long think about what it would take for me to carry a camera around with me often and size really does matter !! :) The very first camera i ever owned was an Olympus Pen D which really was no bigger than a pack of cigarettes and had a really sharp lens and that was what i wanted again.
I have to say that in a few short weeks of ownership the Sony has constantly made my jaw drop with the image quality it is producing from the larger sensor and Zeiss lens, making me actually compare it to the lovely, lovely and much missed Rolliei 35 of old, which is a big call, i know, but i do think the Sony stands comparison.
Overall i am really delighted with the Sony and it goes everwhere with me and has re-ignited my enthusiasm for casual everyday photography.

Back in the day, I used one of these when I didn't want to bring a bigger camera.

I'm not crazy about that clamshell design, but it works. If Oly made a modern remake of the old xA, they would be floating on a mountain of cash
