You surprised me with those IDs Barrie, I'd have thought No.2 was a Harris Hawk ... I won't disagree about no3 because I have no idea what it is but I also don't see a "vee" on the breast that would shout Common Buzzard?

Edit made as you were posting this Paul. Buzzards as you know are extremely variable. One of my local Buzzards had a plain cream head and a plain cream breast, threw a lot of visiting birders.
With approx 9,500 species of bird in the world I'd be doing well if I could put a specific name to about 5% of them

Yes compared to the others the Kestral is a dinkie job. If it also appeared small against number 8 then that points to number 8 being a proper Eagle Owl type.

I noticed these colorful birds recently and didn't realize until after some research that they were fairly common in our desert climate

Is this a Chiffchaff?......I'm hoping for a little more!
Seen today – SW France – rear garden
On the border of our rear garden are quite a few Blackthorn trees. I heard the bird singing, listened for a while but could not see it as it was well hidden. I walked over and the bird stopped singing, after a while it flew out and landed on the overhead wires.
I’m not too familiar with Warbler song and I’m not sure that I would recognise a Chiffchaff song …… but it’s song sounded more extensive and melodic than the Chiffchaff I saw in Brittany.
Studied Collins - Legs look pale for a CC – sorry I could not get an (better) image of it’s primary projection …. Presumably in these parts it can only be a Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler or Wood Warbler .. but do I detect the longer primary projection of ?

is what a Chiffchaff? Can't see an image in Opera (though I can in Firefox)
the colours look a bit weird in the image overall
I'm not going to stick my neck out on this one. I'm slightly inclined towards willow warbler but ... we'll wait for the oracle
