Winning, and then losing National Geographic photo of the year...
An interesting story of how missing one point in the rules disqualified a winner. The photograph is cool, and was taken with a Serious Compact.
Nomad Expediciones Fotográficas blog: National Geographic, how I won and lost the contest in less than one second
Here is the story of how the photograph was made. The photographer had some challenging decisions to make because of the light.

Oops ... still, I like the way he says "well, I should have read the rules properly"
Makes me wonder if the Salon Contest adjudicator should be requesting original raws

Yes. And it doesn't take away from the power of that photograph, or his cool and effective decisions in making it.

Maybe I'm having a hard time comprehending the blog, but I'm confused. Is cropping not allowed? If its not, how would anyone know if an image was cropped unless EXIF data was required? It appears he didn't crop, that he digitally removed(brushed out) the bag.

He got into trouble after sending in the original, unaltered jpeg image as proof of authenticity.

Cropping is not the issue - it was removing the bag. As I understand it, if he had simply cropped he would have been OK. Except of course that the composition would have been different.

Ouch. Rules are rules. But if the action does not break the spirit of the rule ...
Nice photo nevertheless!

I gather that this is the contest that he was entered in:
Traveler Photo Contest 2012 - National Geographic
I find it worthwhile to dig deep through the entries to find my favourite images that didn't make the winners' lists.

I actually liked the plastc bag. It's a great photograph and story anyway.
