Canon Mirrorless CSC to be Announced Tomorrow (Rumor)

Accoding to Digicame-info, the new Canon mirrorless CSC will be announced tomorrow.

    Leaked details:

-Small body with simple controls; no integrated viewfinder or port for accessory electronic viewfinder; no body stabilization

    -18MP APS-C sensor similar to existing 7D 60D 600D 650D cameras; ISO 100-12800 (25,600 Expansion)

-3″ touchscreen 1.04 million pixels display

-Phase and contrast detect "hybrid" AF

-New EF-M mount: Initial two lenses are 18-55mm (29-88mm equivalent) f/3.5-5.6 image stabilized (IS) zoom and 22mm (35mm equivalent) f/2 pancake prime lens. There will also be an adapter at launch for EF (and likely EF-S) lenses.

-No integrated flash (comes with add-on flash like NEX-5N, E-PM1)

    Bundled flash:

    Kit zoom:

    Analysis

The lack of controls, simple design, and lack of viewfinder mean that the price will be very low, and the target market isn't going to care for more controls or a viewfinder. The 35mm equivalent f/2 pancake makes all kinds of sense. If it focuses reasonably fast and is sharp, both of which I expect to be the case, then it alone will be a strong reason to choose this system over a lot of competitors. You won't find a small, affordable (less than $500), f/2 or faster autofocus prime lens at the 35mm equivalent length from Micro 4/3, Sony NEX, Samsung NX, Ricoh GXR, Pentax K-01, Fuji X-Pro, or any of the APS-C cameras from Canon, Nikon, Sony, or Pentax DSLRs. Hard to believe but true.

Canon seems to have gotten a lot right with this initial offering.

I think the lack of an EVF option is still a bit of a downer for Canonites looking for a rangefinder/compact VF camera experience though. Nice design choices if all of that pans out. 35 is about as wide as most casual snappers want to get, so it's a good option.

funnily enough 35mm is about as narrow a prime I could still live with. I think the panasonic 20/1.7 is the closest equivalent to this lens, or the Samsung 20/2.8. But yeah, so far that prime lens is the only reason I'm vaguely interested in this system.

No interest initially, but will be interested to see how it evolves into a system. Canon shouldn't be taken lightly. Sounds like with the 22mm it could be an X100 for people who liked the IDEA of an X100 but, when it came down to it, didn't like the actual X100. And you have the option of a kit zoom too for when the 22 just isn't enough. For those who don't care about viewfinders and who DO care about fast auto-focus, sounds like a good start. I'm sure the IQ will be very very good, probably within the margin of excellence that will allow the pixel peepers plenty to argue about, but likely very very pleasing to the other 99.9% of the population... At the very least, it'll help push the species forward and at most, well, who knows?

Ray, do you know of a source confirming that the autofocus will be fast? The only existing hybrid CDAF/PDAF from Canon is in the 650D (which according to the rumor has the same sensor/processor as the new camera), and by all accounts, the live view AF on that camera is dog slow. Here's a video of the 650D focusing (I found others which looked even slower):

Canon EOS 650D Touch AF + Touch Shutter Test - YouTube

    Similar test of the E-P3:

Panasonic lens focusing on olympus ep3 - YouTube

I'm sure the EOS-M won't AF as slow as the 650D in that video, but I haven't seen anything to suggest it will have particularly fast AF either.

That is my biggest concern. Canon hasn't to date produced a CDAF system anywhere near state-of-the-art in terms of AF speed, and the hybrid system in the 650D hasn't covered itself in glory either. AF speed (i.e. lack of) is probably the worst feature of the G1X. Actually I haven't figured out if the on-sensor PDAF as seen on the 650D was there as a prototype of a future super-duper live-view focusing system with the new STM lenses, or merely to speed up live-view AF on the existing EF and EF-S lenses (which are dog slow with CDAF). There may be some truth to both.

Canon's 'ante up' into the same poker game with the J1/V1's. Sell like crazy at Target and Best Buy, Christmas is coming.

Want me to buy one? Add viewfinder and call it a Canonet !

An addon hot shoe viewfinder like the CV 28/35 minifinder would work very well with the Canon 22mm lens. Those OVFs aren't cheap though!

Since they're calling this new mount EF-M, and the camera itself has 'EOS' plastered all over it, I wonder if that means they've left room in the specifications for the possibility of a full-frame EF-M camera down the road?

that is exactly how i would use this device.
I have such a finder for my GRD 3.
Do worry about focus speed though...
