Thanks for the translation Gary, now I understand, I'm a simple guy. Last night for me onion, bacon and chicken pieces sauted in butter, then chopped apple pieces added along with some cider, simmered briskly for 10 minutes.

I'm getting hungry! And the guacamole I'm making tonight will be with store bought avocados that have ripened on a shelf instead of a tree
You cannot buy my avocados in a store. The are of a variety patented under the name Don Gillogly. First grown in San Diego and only available through a Newport Beach nursery. They are long necked with a bulbous end, filled with creamy meat. The meat is so creamy, that when we go to the Bowl, Mary Lou takes the fruit and mixes the guacamole in situ with a plastic spoon. If I remember, I'll send you a couple.

Melt the butter, add the chopped onions. After about 5 minutes add the chicken pieces, cook for 5 minutes each side (or until lightly browned), add the bacon pieces after the first turn of the chicken, so the bacon's cooked for 5 minutes. Turn the heat up, add quartered unpeeled apple pieces and the cider (drinking cider) and cook for 10 minutes. The cider should have reduced to make a nice sauce.

I can't speak for Nik, but I can't agree with those sentiments. We're all advancing down the road of gaining experience by doing. Given my weather locally I've had a lot of recent experience in the "digital darkroom" so I'm getting better at the post processing lark. You on the other hand sound as though you've got too much sunshine in your life (lucky man) . Having said that we've been promised some tomorrow morning before the next lot of cloud and rain arrives, so hopefully I'll be able to take advantage of that to practice using a camera shutter again.

Not too many sepia examples so here's three of a lovely grasslands area in Santa Isabel,Ca.This is in North San Diego county near the mountain town of Julian. Most people think beaches when they talk of San Diego, but we have a bit of everything.Taken with the E-M5 and P14.

Gary, I don't think that I've ever seen anything from you that could be dismissed as being common

As well as seeing the histogram you can also see the extent of these zones in your image and how they are changing as you make the adjustments. It could be likened to a sophisticated levels or curves adjustment process. To cancel the selected zone just click back on that particular zone box in the zone bar display. I find it can be useful as an adjunct to the histogram, a further way of showing the black and white points of the image for example when used at the end zones.

Great, thanks for the explanation Barrie. I have found that, on my computer at least, Nik Silver Efex can be quite slow and clunky, to the point where it makes Color Efex feel as though it is from a different software company altogether. Essentially this has led to me using Silver Efex as a "get in, get out quick" plugin where I apply a fairly forgiving filter that I have customised, give the image preview a quick lookover, maybe test out a different colour filter if the image doesn't look right, and then hit okay. I do a lot of fine tuning work with the tone curve and I find adjusting the one in Silver Efex to be quite laggy and imprecise, so I make my tone curve adjustments in Photoshop afterwards, just without the benefit of the zone shading.
