Canon Canon G1 X Mark II Announced and Looks Amazing

I'd actually be happier with that lens Jack. You got my vote.

Keep in mind that the sensor in the G1xmk2 is closer to m4/3s size than APS-C.

Yes. But hopefully, the sensitivity will be better, especially with less megapixels. OTOH, Canon APS-C sensors have not kept up with the Sony sensors that everyone else uses.

Mark, let me know how the betting is going, and I'll buy. Or not. :D
Good plan, there might be a camera each in this for us….what a second maybe we better switch this to PM

Hold on, there's no Australian pricing yet.
I assume we'll be around $799 too. Though having said that our dollar's shot and so we might return to the days of old where we pay idiotic prices and then plateau out once the gloss has worn off….and we've already bought from B+H.

$AU799 would be okay. Digidirect is currently firesaleing Fuji X-E1s and 18-55mm lenses for $699 which creates a comparison for sheer value. When the original G1X came out 2 years ago I got mine a place in Melbourne for $700 when the list price was around $800, but I still don't know why it was available for less than list price so early on. The Australian dollar was better then, of course.

If the Oz pricing is out of whack I am willing to help. I'd be happy to buy and ship it at cost, after giving it a quick test drive to be sure it isn't defective. Just let me know. :)

I am a big fan of viewfinders......I occasionally overstate their importance to my own shooting. But when I look back honestly at my own shooting for the last 3 years, I got a LOT higher percentage of good shots when I was using the viewfinderless gf1.

So I had a really big laugh at this statement from that "review" above..... "in order to get a fully-functional camera, you'll be shelling out $1100" referring to the fact that the viewfinder is a $300 accessory. Apparently, the camera is not fully functional without one. I can understand someone saying they wouldn;t consider using it, but saying that it is not fully functional just makes one sound like a lunatic.

What's bizarre is that he apparently felt that the OVF on the G1X was a great feature . Incidentally his report on the new Sigma DP Quattros made no mention of the lack of viewfinders :confused:. I don't know if that website's angle is to be a bit controversial but you do have to wonder sometimes about editorial control in online publications (as opposed to personal blogs). It's a fair point that it has no built-in viewfinder, and that the optional viewfinder adds $300 to the price, but really...

What's bizarre is that he apparently felt that the OVF on the G1X was just about it's best feature  Incidentally his report on the new Sigma DP Quattros made no mention of the lack of viewfinders :confused: I don't know if that website's angle is to be a bit controversial but you do have to wonder sometimes about editorial control in online publications (as opposed to personal blogs). Maybe he's just a huge OVF fan and hates that the Canon lost one and the Sigma still will have an optional one. I think it's just that the reviewer is supposed to flail about wildly about every camera that comes out without getting to spend any real time actually USING one.
