Panasonic LX7 first impressions

Azon

Regular
Hi all!
I have long thought about the LX7 but decided to buy it only after a recommendation by a photographer I respect. On John Griggs's blog I found a very interesting review of the camera with sample pictures; it influenced my decision to pull the trigger and buy it. After two weeks of testing it in public transportation and other challenging places to shoot, I can only agree with John, who has my thanks. This is a wonderful, small and very convenient camera which is now always with me.

I too just took delivery of an LX7 which arrived today which my decision and sitting on the fence was heavily swayed by John's review and pics. I was almost certain that I was going to add an X100 to my X10 but after John's review and the price drop to under $300 I pulled the trigger yesterday. I had a Leica D-Lux5 before the X10 and though I just loved the images, size of the camera and the functionality of the Leica, but unfortunately I had a lot of banding problems on the LCD which for an $800 camera I couldn't live with.
But getting the LX7 in my hands this afternoon I knew that I had made the right choice in a "pocketable" camera which the X10, as much as I love it is not, either is the X100. I was able to easily put the LX7 in a small belt pouch that I kept from the Leica along with a wrist strap.
Thanks for your first pics, I hope I'll enjoy my new LX7 as much as you seem to be enjoying yours!

You and John should be getting kickbacks from Panasonic. I can never get the kinds of results from small sensored cameras that you two post. I'm glad they work for you....those shots are impressive.

Ha ha! Great minds think alike! (and so do ours...) ;)

Seriously, I'm glad you like it as if you did not I'd likely receive some ill will from you, lol. Thanks for the compliment!

The photos you took are great!

How do you know we're NOT getting kickbacks?... lol

I would modify your last sentence and alter the word "never" to "not yet" and thanks for your kind words.

Azon, your photos have a luminosity which I really like. Are you shooting RAW? Is that your post processing? It's a very good look for that material.

Hi John!
Like is not a right word- I LOVE it. And I'll prove it in this thread.
I like to thank you again for such a nice and real review of this camera and I wish every one of us will have it with him any time:)

I just hope the X10 doesn't begin to gather dust.. Lol...
Just kidding, when I'm out on my evening walk with the dog it'll be nice to have such a great camera attatched to my belt instead of swinging around my neck. I'm sure when I'm on a photo specific outing the X10 will be my primary choice..with the LX7 for backup. ;)

John,
jpegs from LX7 are good but in many situations I'm not sure about exposition and display doesn't shows it well in bright light so better to have RAW always, but you know that:)

I do post processing of every picture. Mostly in Topaz Adjust plug in.

It does a good job and I like the look. I use Topaz DeNoise but that's the only plug in I've bought so far and I use it for "special occasions" where I just can't get the noise down enough to make me happy in Lightroom.

I bought just Adjust but tried out almost everything they have. Honestly I can't live without Adjust, it's the best tool that I know, it's based on "High Pass" filter but you don't need any layers and any other headache:)

Welcome to the club, Azon! It's a mighty fine camera. I've only had it for a couple of days, but I see the potential of it. My problem is that I haven't taken a good shot with it yet. It's not the camera's fault though, it's been a slow month overall...
