I don't want Armando to think that I'm hiding anything from him.....and I want to Kyle to see how I'm using the camera that I took out of his shopping cart on Amazon. I'm still just learning the camera and I'm not holding these up as great artwork or anything. They are not straight from camera JPEG..... I'm a tweaker. These are just some samples of typical Luke shots......and EXIF data is available on flickr if you click through. If you want to see a few SOOC Jpegs or want a RAW or two to play with, let me know and I'll see what I can accommodate.

Love love love the tulip! The lighting is perfect and so is the focus and composition :) I can't afford to buy an upgraded K5, so will have to make do. I'll get my AAfilterless jollies with the new GR, I think :)

BTW Luke, you are incorrigible. You really do have a love affair with Pentax, don't you :)

Thanks all.... let me offer some critiques so you all know that I know they are flawed.

1. The orchid - I don't like the 2 extending bits being out of focus. Understanding DOF and macro lenses and how much to have in or out of focus is an ongoing study of mine.

2. Locked focus on the eye and recomposed. I love my dog and wanted to capture the longing and sadness and have the flowers out of focus. Composition could be tighter, but I love the shot. I don't usually love sad shots, but I love this one.

3. Just a snapshot....and not a very good one.

4. I don't know why, I just like it. I was out shooting fences with shallow DOF. I was just a walking cliche machine that day.

5. I'm still unsure about this bark shot. Should I have tried to get more in focus? Or leave some out of focus to show depth. Flickerites have given me equal doses of both answers.

6. I like 95% of the tulips shot. I would like to fix the top petal edge in post and crop a hair tighter at bottom and at right. Flowers are hard to make look exceptional. I used to wonder why people shot flowers. They are easy to shoot OK....they are REALLY hard to shoot GREAT. I'll keep working.

Kristen...... I change nearly everything in post....all the time. Especially color. I should leave well enough alone. The cat on the bed might be SOOC. The colors in the bark and moss shot are possibly true as shot. I think I just sharpened and adjusted contrast on that one. The rest were pretty severe.

(depth of field preview? Might help you compose if you have the option. Or.. live view-- you can see via lcd prior to taking the shot and even minutely recompose and see your composition as you do-- live.)

(i like the color scheme and your comp definitely adds emotion to the image)

(i like it, you might be able to go shallower though on your dof, cliché and mean it man!)

(your out of focus is generally to accentuate something in macro.. by blurring something else.. same as leading the eye. Kinda like you did with your dog but on a smaller scale of course. If you wanted to focus on say one ridge of the bark then all the blurring around it could narrow things up nicely.. but you shot straight on and filled the frame with pattern which has merit on its own but doesn't require shallow dof. In fact it is a bit hindered by it. Something I have learned as I did the same thing and the shots just.. never meet expectations. Better to go on the idea of capturing patterns clearly in this case.. or throwing the entire thing out of focus for a color wash)

(they aren't hard to shoot once you develop the knack however to be creative and not do what everyone else does you really have to work at it.)

(it is okay to tinker Luke.. and Nic is a LOT of fun to explore. Just try not to fall into the rut of hitting a filter and letting it go at that.. always tweak to your eye.. the presets while often nice should only get you going in the right direction. I've seen pro's, sadly, just hit a few manufacturer presets and call their work done. That's not skill to me. To process if fine, let it be your creativity that guides it.)
