Flickr Crashes iPad Browsers (eventually)

This is not a good thing, I'll have to go post something somewhere in Flickr... but there it is.. you get to look at a few photographs but scrolling past 3 pages and I've had crashes on Safari and iCabMobile. I'm about to test Atomic, Chrome and Opera....

What it means to me is that I may have to eat my words about staying with Flickr. I use the iPad for a lot of simple editing and upload these days... not fond of the idea that viewing what I've uploaded longer than a week ago may be out of the question, never mind scrolling through other people's stuff. What a pain!

[edit] I've now posted in feedback after discovering that Flickr is causing my iPad to run out of memory. All those huge "thumbnails" loading up whether I want them all at once or not. Mercury browser finally gave me the answer (it has a setting which when switched on will give low memory warnings... it came up as soon as I got a few swipes down the page on Flickr)

So far, my feedback has been ignored. There are so many people posting, its easy for things to get lost but the help forum seems to be the only way to do it.

That's good to know Sue. I have a similar problem with 500PX. It just disappears after scrolling through about 30 pages or so. Most annoying!

Oh yes, of course, 500px does the same thing (is Flickr copying 500px I wonder?)

The problem is in the stripped down framework of the version of Safari in mobile iDevices. My photography website has this problem because I use an iframe tag to embed separately served content into a page. An iframe is like a "browser within a browser".

I use it to tile in a slide show generated by a Lightroom plugin. I also use the slide shows by themselves on my site (not running in an iframe) and they are fine.

But when mobile apple users would enter my site -- it would crash.

I hacked around a bit and found some workarounds but it meant recoding a bunch of stuff by hand when I changed the site and that gets old. I finally decided to check on the request and automatically redirect users to my News page instead of the main entry page with a slide show running. If you click this link on a mobile it will take you to my news page, but if you're on a "full" browser it will take you to my main page and slide show: Entropic Remnants Photography by John Griggs

Not sure what flickr is doing, but in particular running certain j.a.v.a (can anybody tell me why the word j a v a is filtered into **** on this site?) script based content in iframes seems to be problematic. I don't know the innards of browsers enough to give you more detail but it isn't the first time this has been encountered. Apple, of course, doesn't care.

Apparently flickr may not either!

How much memory do you have? Fwiw, I have 64Gb and don't crash.

You may also have a late model device that has been corrected? I'm running 32gb but it's an original iPad running 5.1.1 iOS.

I don't think 32gb would be too little, but who knows. It may depend more on how much real RAM (not flash) is in the device and the later models have more I believe. The programs don't actually run in flash, but in some amount of real dynamic RAM which probably varies among the device generations and I suspect phones and 1st gen iPads might have the least.

I've got the iPad2.

I'm on iPad 3, its a 16Gb but its RAM is greater than in the earlier versions and I have about 5Gb spare fro swapfiling but TBH I am not sure how the actual memory is managed. FWIW its not just Safari crashing. Its also iCabmobile, Mercury, Chrome, and Opera Mini as well. Perhaps its more to do with the retina screen. Anyway, I'm using the ?details=1 as mentioned by Paul and that works fine for me

As tablet users are massively on the rise worldwide (and Apple leads the show with the iPad) along with the fact the new Flickr seems designed for a touch interface, it is freaking insane that Flickr's regular old page that used to work fine with an iPad is now broken for some.

Bad UI, seizure inducing graphic design and the ability to crash something I've never heard of crashing. Bravo yahooians, bravo.

Is it "yahooians", "yahoosians", or "yahoosiers"... I'm not sure. We need a wiki on this...
