Sony I can't stop using Sony's "picture effects" (share yours, too!)

Water color is a lot of fun, lol.

I've posted these before I think

It seems that after a brief flurry of these when I first had an RX100 nearly a year ago, I HAD stopped using them, pretty much completely. But, we're just hanging out reading in the beautiful Amalfi sunshine today, so I figured what the hell and pulled out the RX1, switched to jpeg, found the illustration mode, and went a little nuts. They are sort of fun once in a while... So here are several from just a few minutes ago... Damn, I am QUICK with a brush!

First, a cartoon rendering of the patio where we've basically been living for the past week and a half...

We paid a visit to the BBC News studios where a pal of mine had a go at the weather

You can use the effects over and over to create variations until you hit your Masterpiece

It's funny, but since I sold my NEX cameras, I have to admit I have a problem being NEAR a Sony camera, lol. A different "effect" they had on one photographer...

Lest I sound critical of the actual effects... I'm not trying to be, just making a joke on the word "effect". It was the user interface on the Sony's that drove me nuts, lol.

Well, John, to the minute extent it matters, I felt similarly. I was OK with but didn't love the Nex (early times though, haven't tried the newer ones), absolutely DISliked the RX100 UI, and almost didn't try the RX1 based on all of that. But LOVE the UI of the RX1. The RX100 is a great little camera that has an awful lot stuffed into a tiny package - I can't call the interface bad, but it was terrible for me personally. I fully get why some people like it as much as they do, but I never could get on with it or enjoy shooting with it. But the RX1 is one of the most enjoyable and most tactile interfaces I've used and is wonderfully customizable in an easy to use way, with five fully programmable buttons and three custom modes, so you can get that camera working pretty much exactly how you'd ever want to. The ONLY thing I'd like to change with that camera is the auto-ISO system (there's no usable defined minimum shutter speed, which makes it of limited utility in aperture priority mode), but that doesn't really bother me for how I use this camera. And the focal length... :D (I can't help it - I just like 28mm THAT much).

I really DON'T care much for the illustration / watercolor effects personally, other than as a fun novelty to play around with once in a while (at least after the initial buzz, which can take a while to wear off). I had a great time messing around with them yesterday, but I doubt I'll use them again for a great while (maybe I'll do a short burst in Positano too, where they'd be equally fun).

It's all personal preference - there's plenty to like about lots of Sony gear for some people, plenty not to like for others. But even for those of us who have tended NOT to, not all Sony's are created equal, or even similarly. For what little it's worth...

I assumed I'd HATE the RX100 because I hate bad UI and I hate tiny cameras......but i love it. I'm pretty close to selling off my whole m43 kit (!) When taking photos is this fun, why bother with anything else.

And no, I am NOT sniffing glue.

And yes, I DO like the effects.

Yes, but the key question is when did you STOP sniffing glue? :D

Seriously, I fully get loving the RX100. It's a really intoxicating little camera (not even in the sniffing glue way!). I liked it until I didn't. I know others who reacte similarly, but obviously LOTS of people carried on loving it. I have no quarrel with that. For some types of shooting, I'd have probably continued liking it - I was kind of bummed that my wife chose not to bring it on this trip because I could have probably really enjoyed using it a few times (although with the Coolpix A along, I probably realistically wouldn't have). It's ALL personal preference and I don't begrudge anyone who loves their RX100. I only responded to John's comment because I HAD felt similarly and just wanted to chime in about Sony generally, who I've changed my mind about recently.

As for the filters, my GUESS (and that's clearly all it is), is that you probably won't be using it much in a month or two. If I'm wrong, carry on, enjoy it, more power to you, etc, etc, etc. I tend to get pretty turned on by stuff like that too, but I tend to get turned off to it pretty quickly too. I loved the Olympus "dramatic tone" filter (I think that's what it's called?) when they first came out with it. I shot waaaay too much with it, didn't shoot raw+jpeg as a backup, and now I'm frankly nauseated by all but a few of those images and kick myself for not saving clean copies because some of those shots were pretty good and I'd still like them if processed differently. But that's me - it need not be you or anyone else. But if it happens to you too, you've been warned!

Yes, I have a similar reaction to the RX100. I, too, sometimes find myself thinking of selling off most of my other gear. I even like the effects (in moderation).

And I'm not sniffing glue either...! ;)

Ray, thanks for the warning. I understand the inherent risks of the filter love/hate flip-flop. It's why I HATE that Sony doesn't allow the use of JPEG + RAW with the filter effects. I recently rebought an E-P1 because I have a few shots that are my all-time favorites and were shot with the grainy b/w filter.

Now where did I leave that tube of modeling glue?:alcoholic: (the drunk smilie will have to suffice......I couldn't find one for "high on glue")

I have an E-P1 in my "collection" and the grainy b/w filter is a fave of mine also -- though I very seldom actually shot with it. But what I DID do with it, I liked.

You might already know this, but you can apply the watercolour and the illustration effects to Raw files (after the shot is taken), and the camera will save it as a new jpg. However, none of the other effects is available this way, and this seems ridiculous to me.

Like you, I'd want to see ALL the effects being available when using Raw + Jpeg (Raw file intact, and Jpeg with effect applied). Unless there's a very good technical reason for not doing so (I can't think of one), then Sony seems to have made a pretty stupid implementation of this feature.

I actually tried to apply the illustration effect retro-actively to a couple of shots I'd done in raw. The option showed up on the playback menu, but when I went to apply it, it said it couldn't be used on this type of photo. So are you sure it works with raw, or does it possibly only work with a "clean" jpeg??? It doesn't matter to me, but I was curious about why it wouldn't work in this way...

OK, how is this done. I can't seem to find my manual right now (one of these days, I will need to clean my office, but today won't be the day) and I just tried with both a RAW file and then with a JPEG. I go into playback mode and I have tried hitting every button on the camera and none of them seem to do this.
