Sony Using non-Sony external flashes with the RX1?

I know that there must be a way but for the life of me, I can't figure it out.

Is there anyone using non-sony flashes in the hot shoe of the RX1 using some sort of "hot shoe adapter" that translates the RX1 contacts into a universal "any flash will do" set of contacts?

There are multiple options that I've seen and it's not clear which one does what.

On a related note; which is the cheapest sony flash that is compatible with the RX1 wireless flash system? And does it work with the flash off of the hotshoe?

I'm using a Canon 600EX in the hotshoe and with an off-camera cable. It only transfers trigger data, I haven't been able to get it to trigger rear-sync or wireless yet though. I think some others have had better luck in that department, but I'm experimenting. I'm definitely working to narrow down usable flash setups :)
