Fuji dpreview reviews X100s - gold

Interesting stuff. Looking at the comparison shots, I must confess I prefer the rendering from both the X100 and the E-M5 to either the X100S or the Sony. I found it interesting that all but the X100 "saw" dust and junk on the items... but the X100 still appeared sharper to my eyes. I wonder if they did any noise reduction or cleanup... they said not.

To me, the review confirms again why I`m not a fan of the Fuji X sensor rendering. A lot of the higher noise performance is achieved by loosing detail. I would choose detail rendering with some grainy noise any day over baby skin smooth one with smeared and lost details. In the direct comparison, the OMD looks mighty impressive and I prefer its more "honest" rendering. And it leaves the decision to do all the softening and smearing in PP to the shooter, if he/she wants.

I'll admit to having not looked too much at the X100s, mainly because I am 100% happy with my X100 so don't feel the need to take anything more than a passing interest.

But my point was going to be that your opinion, completely valid as it is, shows exactly that as always cameras are horses for courses - I am not that bothered about super detail - I love my X100 for what it is and for the fact I want to pick it up every time I walk past it - the feel of the X100 files does it for me.

Again maybe it is more to do with the X-Trans that opinion seems quite polarised, I don't know, but the X100 and hence I guess the X100s is about more than the sum of it's parts.

Just my 2 cents..

As you might expect from comments I've made at other times , my love of the old X100 is very qualified ; I never bought into the hype of a fabulous lens and IQ much preferring that of my G1X.
As soon as I started to use the X100S I realised that finally I had a fast compact camera to outperform my Leica X1 ; that same lens is working very differently with the new sensor.

Try as I might I see no advantage in keeping the old version - colour looks identical to my eyes although the extra sharpness might be interpreted as "a more digital look".
I guess that my old X100 will be handed on in time.

I've even bought a SuperWarranty from Fuji to cover the next 4 years as I'm so certain that this device is staying with me. I've never done that before.
I hate the fixed lens/I love the fixed lens...oh the camera is a joy to use in light or shade and so easy to carry around.
Glad it got a Gold Award not so pleased to find that I'm turning into a Fuji Fanboy!

Loved the original x100 but in hand the new S is a very different proposition - especially the manual focus. I could never go back.

BTW: DPR reviews are the worst there is. Are any of their reviewers actual photographers? But I'm with Luke they are worth it just for the comments section. So entertaining, like watching through the perspex into a chimp enclosure - yep especially the frequent show of fangs and impromptu poop fights, hilarious!

Gotta say, I haven't really read the review as I don't own one and I don't see myself buying one if the future, all I now about it is from word of mouth and from what I heard, it's really good.

Probably coming from the desire to be entertained I decided to read the comments, AND I WASN'T DISAPPOINTED. I was (and still am) laughing myself silly, it's hilarious! (who knows, maybe I'm getting affected by the second glass of scotch), I can't believe that some people can be so vicious and petty. I don't normally go to dpreview, but I am thinking to going there everytime I am bored, need to be entertained, or just need a good laugh. Perhaps I'll leave a comment there in the future "not happy with the result? no worries! go open a vein"

While some of the comments are way over the top, I can understand why people are raising concerns about the validity of dpr's review. Here's an example: One of them is x100s, another one is a "pretender" according to dpr's review. They both got the same raw score, DPR doesn't seem to use their own comparison tool to draw conclusion. Similarly, video mode, optics and value better than A? Ergonomics and handling better than GR? It sounds like the overall score is more indicative of the individual reviewer's enthusiasm towards the camera.
