HOOOOOOO I love me this cap!
I'm all about convenience and carrying as little as possible for my photography.

*PoP!*
It's open and hooded!

*pOp!*
It's closed and turns into a lens cap

It's MAGICNESS!!!

I swear I read about it here, but a quick iPad search didn't bring me up anything for "Hoocap"

So if it was YOU... THNX!:D

Anyone have a photo of one ON the camera? Since the lens doesn't move when you turn the camera on or off, I'm assuming this is not an auto open/close cap like the little spring loaded caps you can get for some compacts. So I'm not seeing a lot of benefit other than you're less likely to lose the cap???

Never mind, saw a demo of it online. Pretty clever, but also looks pretty bulky. I may check one out, but I have a feeling I'm not likely to keep it on the RX1. Such a classy looking little brick of a camera - not sure I could do that to it, functional as it may be...

That (and that's a reasonable concern when it's a $70 metal lens cap!), and this is also a hood. So it gives you the protective/flare reducing benefits of a hood plus the benefit of keeping track of the cap.

Since the RX1 doesn't come with a hood, if you look at this as a $39 aftermarket hood that *also* doubles as a lens cap so you won't lose one, it makes a little more sense. I'm still not 100% sold, but I'm thinking about it.

Tell you where I'd really like one, is on my X100S - I have dropped the cap for that (or had it fall off) several times now and dinged it up pretty good on pavement & gravel.

Not a huge deal, and I'm sure I can get a replacement one if I was worried about the cosmetics, but this would be nice to have hood+cap. Since it's 49mm filter size there's a possibility the Hoocap marked for the RX1 would also work on the X100S which would mean it'd be an even better dual use deal for me.

Yeah, I get that it doubles as a hood, but I already have one of the JJC knock off hoods that basically lives on the camera and I've never found the lens cap much of a hassle and haven't lost one in a while (I shouldn't say that out loud...).

I always thought the jjc bayonet / official hoods looked too small for the lens. It was weird that they seem smaller around than the lens. It was throwing me off to see it that way. Lol!

And yeah, not auto, it works kinda like then12/2 and 17/1.8 only lenses to get to distance scale
Pop it forward or backward

Ugh can't edit.

Also, don't cringe, mine travels with me lens down in the cup holder of my car. Which OBNOXIOUSLY has three lil things that POP out to hold cups secure. They happen to fit RIGHT into the groove of the jjc hood. Super annoying. But I suppose in case I flip my Cherokee somehow, the camera will be secure in its cup holder ;) lol

Oh, I found edit
It's in an obnoxious menu diving feature
Blah

It's going to force me to pay more attn to my posting! Gasp!!! ;)

I love the rx1 cap! It fits so nice and secure! Well... Without a filter on the lens... With one, its much less secure feeling.

My x100 is my other cap I love to death! I've never had it pop off, so I guess that's why I love it still and everyone else seems to think its annoying. Lol!

I put the little metal cap away and use a plastic squeezy one that clips to the lens hood. Let me know through if you get the hoocap and it works for the X.

I got one for the RX1 and, to my surprise, I really quite like it. It adds to the size of the whole assembly when it's open and you're shooting, but barely adds anything at all when closed other than a bit of bulk to the lens area. But not much. And its a lot more of a hood than the Sony original or JJC knockoff I've been using. Here are three quick shots with the original hood and cap, with the Hoocap closed, and one with the Hoocap open. I think I'm gonna keep this thing on the camera for a while and see how I like it in use.

Nice timing Ray - I just bought one this morning. I shot the RX1 a bit this weekend and I decided I could use one after all. Glad you like it, sounds like it'll work just like I was hoping.

I like it. The thing that surprised me is even though its sort of bulkier around the lens, the whole thing actually doesn't extend forward quite as far as the original/JJC hood does. So in terms of the depth, which is the only direction that this feels like a somewhat larger camera, its no deeper and actually a little bit less so.

Let me know how you like it...

Will do! I agree about the depth on the RX1 feeling "big" so I'm glad this doesn't seem to extend the barrel out much.

So, I've had mine a while and gotten to use it a few times out and about and the verdict is I love it. No fumbling with or misplacing a cap, fast and easy to get to shooting ready, and it stays mostly out of the way. Wouldn't mind having these one a few more of my lenses, I think :)

Yeah, I've been out shooting with it too. It's a keeper. It looks a little funky and doesn't have the "premium" look or feel of the rest of the camera, but it does it's job really conveniently, stays out of the way, etc...

I'm fine with the lens bulk. I wish the rest of the camera were a tad larger so it were more balanced. Plus with that extra room they could add a magic baby af speed pixie or something. :)
