Leica 50mm Summilux at Ascot Races Today

A lot of character in these photos Christina. Shooting a Lux 50 is not the easiest thing to do, especially if you are shooting it wide open at 1.4. I wonder if the Leica M's rangefinder patch is better than the M9's.

I am sure the EM5 + 75/1.8 would have been a better tool for most photographical endeavors. And definitely the 45/1.8. As much as I love using a rangefinder, it's just far easier to use a highly effective AF like the EM5 vs. a manual focusing rangefinder. And trying to focus a 75 or 90 on the Leica is a SUPER challenge. I don't think there's even a 150mm M lens (equivalent to the Oly 75), which would literally be impossible to focus in my M9.

when I take 10 cameras I always see a shot more suited to the 1 or 2 I left at home in the specially designed and built room. And, yesssssss.....that last shot is awesome, just beautiful.

Thanks for the encouragement guys although I don't need to be encouraged to have 85 + 1 cameras!! I'm on the fence about keeping the M at the moment. It certainly makes one appreciate AF. The files that come out of it are quite meh when put into Lightroom , even with the firmware fix the colour is not nice. I have mine set to daylight as auto is still very gold looking. LR auto makes them quite blue and any tinkering just makes them a mess. Luckily the b & w jpegs are easy to work with and it doesn't take too much pp to make them jump out so to speak but I didn't buy it just to have to shoot black and white soooo..... Not sure how much I would lose in selling so soon or indeed where to sell it reliably.

The RF focus is really accurate, more so than the vf in fact , although I found myself resorting to the vf yesterday mostly for speed ... Those people just wouldn't keep still!

A Couple More of afterthoughts!

Lead Me Not Into Temptation...... by christilou1, on Flickr

The last one was the scrapings!

Christilou, I admit that I sometimes have difficulty sorting out the lens/camera part from your PP - eg in Light Up and Race Follower it appears that you use a fairly strong vignette and/or defocus in PP? While this works well (IMO) for shots, or camera systems, where the DOF was not quite shallow enough to isolate a subject, I get the impression it is not working well when you have this already-sharp and fast FF camera. Apologies if you have in fact not done much PP here, but if you had, I'd be interested in seeing the same shots closer to as-shot.

From the photos you don't look like you're struggling.

The M's take some time to learn. Focusing fast and accurately is a skill. And if your rangefinder is just a bit off then........ It took me about a year with my M9 to be totally comfortable and two and a half years on I think I'm still learning. SO much for a simple camera. But it is hugely rewarding once your over the hump.

As for the colour. Has Colin made a Huelight profile yet? If he has it's the best $10 you'll spend all year. If not a shot of a color checker and you can make a DNG profile yourself that will be better than Adobe standard.

The ascot opening day

Sorry, this Yank can't hear about Ascots without remembering the song from "My Fair Lady". Yes, I suppose I'm dating myself, but my picture is already up on another thread, so there's no turning back now.

I agree that the B&W shot of the man with the binoculars and the surrounding throng is wonderful.

Here's one straight out of camera DNG. Sharpened and straightened slightly. Auto exposure in LR and CEffex border. F2.8 1/500th

Wow... that is a wonderful example of just a great shot that your M combo is fantastic for.... amazing 3D effect through the strong selective focus; very clear what the subject of the image is, but the background also tells part of the story (horse, fences, people...). Love the way the people become bokeh-ized! Of course every shot may need a slightly different approach to "sing", but to my eyes this one needs nothing more.
