Anyone found good forums outside seriouscompacts and preview for discussing the RX1 ?

Also what's a good picture critique forum these days ?

I think we still have a good # of RX1 users over here. Or at least I think we do!

Yeah, I think so. The RX1 image thread keeps going along. But I think most of the discussion and questions were mostly in the first several months, which is nearly a year ago now... So not a lot left to talk about - just to get on with shooting!

The Facebook Sony RX1 World Shooters group is pretty decent for sharing photos and discussing stuff. Mostly it's enjoyable to see the quality photos posted by the members :)

Other than that, I hang around here and discuss the RX1 and share photos from time to time.

I checked that out - some nice stuff but the guy taking those bear shots isn't gonna be around to enjoy them for long! But doesn't FB essentially own all rights to any photos you post there? I'm surprised some of those folks (who are really good) would post their stuff there...

Did I read that right?! Bear photos with an RX1?!

Yeah, and the guy was REAL close and in one the mama bear was looking right at him because, he claims, one of her cubs came over and was checking him out. I'm not sure I believe him because most people don't survive that kind of idiocy. OTOH, there could be another used RX1 on the market real soon, if you don't mind the blood stains!

Yeah, there was a whole discussion on that point... I told him that last year a week after we left Denali National Park they had their first fatal bear attack in the entire 100 year history of the park. The victim of the attack had a camera with him and it was full of photos of a (seemingly) perfectly docile bear getting progressively closer and closer prior to the attack.

And yes, FB has a terrible policy about [potentially] reusing your photos. You still retain your copyright but as I understand it they could reuse your photos to advertise.

LOL! I saw that photo, which BTW, was a great photo. It was interesting to see the photographer's comment that bears don't bother him and aren't a danger to him, because he doesn't bother him. Thank goodness for the RX1's silent shutter.

i have an rx1 on its way to me, so i am resurredting this thread!

certainly, there is some nice info on this forum, but lets be honest, theres much more consistant posting about the older fuji x line, or older panny and oly m4/3s. there are very active forums for the fuji line and the sony a/e mount lines. but ive found nothing even secondarily devoted to what many call the original FF game changer.

so, while i will continue to enjoy any rx posts here, plus all the other wonderful and excellent topics routinely posted here (i am a donor and i really appreciate this site!), i would love to know if anyone has found a more rx-centric forum?

There are always gonna be more users / discussers of a more mainstream-affordable camera or system like the X-series than of a very expensive specialty camera like the RX1. There just aren't that many of us who are both fortunate enough to be able to afford one and who WANT to buy one. That's true here, and everywhere else I've seen. There's a pretty active Sony forum (a couple of them for different lines) on DPR - there's a LOT more discussion of the RX100, now the RX10, and the various cheaper cyber-shots than the RX1. There's a small group of RX1 shooters over there and over here, and some of us are the same people. If there's another site that's dedicated to ongoing discussions of Sony gear (other than Amin's TalkEmount site) I'm not aware of it. But if there is, I'd be willing to bet the RX1 users would be a small minority there too. Maybe Fred Miranda or Get DPI have active Sony forums, but I bet a relatively small number of RX1 shooters.

This is the reality of buying non-mainstream cameras. When the X100s and the Ricoh GR were the hottest fixed lens cameras on the internet, I chose to buy the RX1 and Nikon A. I'm very VERY happy with both decisions but both of them pretty much left me out of the intoxicating group high that tends to happen around early adopters of very popular (at least initially) cameras. There were great threads the discussions of both the X100s and GR both here and elsewhere where all of the new owners could share the mutual excitement and images. My new cameras lived in some relatively lonely corners of the internet and missed out on all of the popular adulation and I have to admit I sort of missed a little of the buzz. Not enough to reconsider what I'd bought - not even close! I've sort of gotten in on some of that new-sh!t buzz around the EM1 and GX7 and that's been sort of fun, but the m43 community has always been a really contentious place, probably inevitable when there are two brands fighting for the same basic slice of that pent up need for brand-identification and "mine is bigger than yours" ego-gratification. So I tend not to dip too much more than a toe (or maybe ankle) in those waters either.

All of which has been a sort of abrupt, but ultimately incredibly welcome reminder that it's about using the tools you enjoy and USING them to make images you like. And while talking about your new gear with like minded folks is fun, sometimes there aren't all that many like minded folks to talk with. And there are far worse things!

thanks for such a thoughtful reply ray. yes, i do feel very lucky that we're in such an exciting time of wonderful high quality choice for our hobby, and that we can take at least some advantage of it. i'm starting to see lots of buzz and, finally!, some really nice results from the A7/r with mf glass. truth is, being a longtime legacy glass user, i'm finding that focusing aids arent keeping up with my, lets say, 'maturing' vision, and coupled with the 4 months of pretty cold weather in my mountain zone, the mf experience is losing a little steam with me.

add to that my recently-purchased-totally-on-a-whim epl5 surprisingly (to me) turns out some af IQ with the 45/1.8 that imo keeps up with the big boy fuji x line, and, along with my x100, i'm pretty satisfied--except that the images ive seen from the rx1 really set my head aflame!

now, tbh, at the 'intro' price of $2800 or whatever, plus mandatory, for me, $400 evf, this was as much a nonstarter for me as an m9. but last week i managed to score an entire kit-cam, evf, RRS grip, batteries and charger--for about the price of an a7, so i couldnt resist. however, at the end of the day its about results. in order for me to keep this rig and be happy, i'm gonna need to see a notieceable IQ improvement from my x100 at normal iso and a 2 stop improvement at high iso--and even though the x is a few years old, imo this will be no easy feat.

but, like you said, if it does offer that kind of performance, itd be fun to be able to share excitement, discussion, tips etc!

Hmmm, whether it's two full stops better at high ISO is a pretty tough target. I'd say it's close. The X100 was quite good at 3200 as I recall, but 6400 was really pushing it. The X-trans cameras were much better at 6400, but there was the whole question of ISO inflation and whether 6400 on those cameras really equated to 6400 on other cameras. A few technical responses indicated there was little ISO inflation - no more than about a third of a stop, but my real world experience indicated it was pretty close to a full stop. But I can't back that up with data - just how it worked for me. The RX1 is quite useable at 12,800, but to be a full two stops better than the X100, it would have to be as good at 12,800 as the X100 is at 3200 and I'm not sure it's quite THAT good. Then again, I've never shot them back to back (I have with the X100s, but not the original X100, which I sold shortly after I got an X-Pro almost two years ago). It's close though, which itself is pretty impressive. At base ISO, I don't think there's much improvement although there's obviously a real step up in terms of DR and resolution, so the files are far more workable. But the flat out gorgeous LOOK of an X100 file in decent to good light is subjectively very very hard to beat.

Regardless, I hope you like it. I spent the full amount for a new one with EVF, but it was fully worth it to me. If I'd waited around for the kinds of deals you can find now, I wouldn't have had it when we spent July on the Amalfi Coast and having it for that trip was worth every extra dollar I spent on it. And the more I use it and the more I see of other full frame alternatives, I suspect it's gonna be my only full frame going forward for some time to come. I just don't see the right combination of small enough body AND small enough lenses in enough focal lengths luring me into a full frame system in the foreseeable future. And although I like other focal lengths, when I'm walking around with the RX1, I never seem to want for anything wider or longer. Plus, as you've seen, current m43 gear really does suffice for an awful lot of uses and it's only gonna get better. So the RX1 is with me for a good long while I think, maybe I'll buy an updated version someday, but then again, the things others find lacking with this camera (built in EVF, faster AF, etc) just don't bother me. And beyond those, I'm not sure how meaningfully they can improve it...

interesting...

i bet it was great to have in italy. my wife and i have been thinking about a similar trip for a year or so. i'm sure it was awesome.

and yes, ive always been enamored with my x100 results and the user experience. ive never lost a shot i wanted to 'slow' af. and as other cams have come and gone, i,m actually at a point where i appreciate it even more.

but what ive seen, from you and others, of the rx1, it seems to beat the x at what, imo, it does best, that framewide clarity and microcontrast pop. i love the 35mm fl, and for me and my ona bowery bag, its no problem to carry along the epl5/45 rig. but i find i can easily crop the X for a more portrait pov without any adverse effect.

as for high iso, i feel i'm getting more resolution out of my epl5 at 3200 than with my X. i'm looking to do better than that with the rx1 at 6400, especially because i'm loosing a stop of DOF with the rx1 over the X. we'll see, i'm very hopeful.
