Hi

Does anybody own or shoot with both the Sony RX100 and the Panasonic GX1 with 12-42 PZ.

Is image quality i.e sharpness, DR, color the same or better on either ?

Thanks for your kind advice.

Regards.

Adam.

I've owned/own both and without having tried to make a real study of the comparison I'd say the RX100 is a lot closer to the GX1 than you'd think, and it fits in a shirt pocket. On the other hand, the RX100, which I should mention fits in a shirt pocket, is somewhat lens-limited. The GX1, which for clarity I should point out will never fit in a shirt pocket, will mount any of the m4/3 glass, and some of those lenses are really superb - but remember, you'll never get the GX1 and one of those superb lenses in your shirt pocket. The IQ of the RX100 is really surprising - I think the first question I'd ask myself is: do I need a really compact camera that will fit into a shirt pocket, or do I want more of a system camera with interchangeable lens capability?

My own answer is that they really don't overlap and I have both, but if I could only have the RX100 I would actually be quite happy most of the time...and it would be in my, you guessed it, shirt pocket. ;)

j... I take it you like to put cameras in your shirt pockets? ;)

The RX100 sounds like a pretty cool little camera. I'm trying to avoid adding yet another small cam to the mix. For "shirt pocket" photography I'm presently using the GR. :)

I like the flexibility of the zoom, but if I were less committed to that, the GR or the Coolpix A would be in my pocket. (y) :)

I like that flexibility too... LX5 is my zooming pocket cam, presently. May need to upgrade that to an RX100 someday!

Or, if the smaller size of the RX100 isn't compelling, and it is noticeably smaller than the LX series, I owned an LX7 for a while and have to say that it really was noticeably better in every way than my LX5.

Lots of digital camera can be fits on our pocket that's convient, but the photo not good compared to SLR. You know, 1 cent is a cent.

j... I didn't realize that the RX100 is smaller than the LX7... that's nice!

I haven't looked into how IQ compares between the two. ?

I know I prefer 24mm equiv. on the wide end over 28mm, but that isn't necessarily THE most important criterion... but is relatively significant!

Don, as you know so well, there are trade-offs and compromises. I love 24mm FOVE...but it does me little good if the camera isn't with me! I'd love an a la carte design where I could pick the best features from many cameras...but it wouldn't be possible. :D
