I'm really only interested in use for close up work for use with an FT-1

Is the AF faster and the screen easier to see in strong sunlight

appreciate all comments

I can't speak to those two specific questions, as I don't have a V3, but I do have a V1 and V2 - and I would not use the screen in sunlight, I would use the viewfinder with either of these. And both of these are very fast to focus - I don't know the V3 to be faster. But overall ergonomics are FAR better on the V2 than the V1, and from what I've heard, the V3 is also quite good ergonomically with the EVF and grip, less so without those accessories. BTW, you might wish to post this in the Nikon 1 system forum, not the Nikon fixed-lens forum.

My sense is that the IQ is not much better across the different generations, other than the V3 having higher resolution and better noise reduction in JPEG. RAW IQ is basically unchanged across these 3 cameras.

The Nikon 1 series differences mainly lie in features & performance rather than sensor output?
(Just like the film days eh? ;))

In good light and with the correct settings, (but that's the same with all cameras), the sensor is really good (for what I want it for anyway)

Got the following this morning for one of the original V1's ……. with a regular (non Macro) Nikon AF-S lens

Excuse the OOF areas but they would be the same with any camera as the DOF at that distance is very very shallow

Immature Male Broad-bodied Chaser - I still think that it is a Immature male although others think it's a female ….. …….. it's a FEMALE not a male

I would have thought that the V3 18mp sensor will be an improvement on the V1 10mp sensor enabling more pixels on the image - in fact with that small sensor it must have one of the biggest "pixel densities" around.

But I picked up my V1 body for £150 - as new

After the V1 I bought a J3 to get the new sensor improvements of a V2 inclusive a missing optical low-pass filter and 14MP.
But the difference in IQ is neglectible, I would say.
DXOMark gives both (V1 and V3) a very similar score: Nikon 1 V3 vs Nikon 1 V1 vs
