Nikon Nikon apologizes for Nikon 1 V3 Shortage

I can not IMAGINE paying $1,200 for the V3 compared to all the other models with essentially the same sensor and same lens for $200. I know the improvements are great, but I can have a LOT of fun for that extra $1,000. Maybe the delay in production is to clear out the backlog of older models.

What, you mean... people are buying it??? :D

It's difficult to imagine who but current Nikon 1 users would buy the V3 for that price, when more flexible gear can be had for the same money. The Panasonic GM1 is quite a bargain, considering the image quality is at least equal to the EM-5 and GH3, has a larger sensor, and takes the whole range of native m43 lenses. And it's close to half the price of the N1 V3.

I'd say Nikon DSLR users that already own Nikon glass....:)

This camera should be on the sidelines of every youth soccer match, baseball game, football game, quidditch tournament, swim meet, etc. There really is nothing on the market quite like it. As a V1 owner, I'd love the improved controls and increased megapickles.

But I've got too many cameras right now...

I agree 110% on the sidelines comment. I have a J1 and owned a V1, nothing comes close in their range for AF performance, though I haven't gotten my hands on an A6000. That said, IMO the One is doomed, J3's are now going for $199, that price point means easy sales, anything over $500, the average Joe is going to look at a DSLR.

Yep, I bought an OMD EM10, 25/1.4 and 45/1.8 instead of upgrading from my V1 to the V3. And the funny thing is, the whole mFT kit cost me just 100 bucks more than the V3 woudl have.

Sometimes, things aren't about price.....:)

True. To a professional or people who actually know photography. However, to the masses, price is the biggest factor. But if the V3 is decidedly not marketed for the masses, then it is alright :)

It is like... first class flight is not for everyone... but the airline is kept afloat because of economic class passenger.

The V1 was worth a purchase at the clearance price.
But the V3 is priced way too high for me.
And now it looks like Nikon is doubling down and gorging on the price of its lenses.

That's it. I'm out of the Nikon 1 system
I am voting with my wallet.

If not for the investment in Nikon glass,
I might be out of their FX systems also.

Luckily MU43 and Sony A7 family allow me to use my Nikon lenses.
And with the A7S, it makes manual focus a non issue because it is so easy to use with expanded view with focus peaking...

The V3 is pricey no doubt, but has turned into my fun camera and is quite versatile. With the 70-300CX and grip it is a mini DSLR super telephoto rig reaching 800mm. With the 32/1.2 it produces lovely shallow DOF images and is fast enough for performances and night photography. With a totally silent shutter it works as a very discreet street photography cam. With its nice collection of diminutive native lenses it makes for a great lightweight travel kit (took it to Tokyo for a couple of weeks). It will never match the IQ of larger sensors but you'd be surprised at some of the images I've taken over the past couple of months.

A few V3 Photos

I actually hope this camera never gains widespread popularity - kind of want to keep its attributes a little under the radar. Nikon is helping fulfill this wish with its pricing and shortage. Interesting to see what happens next.

Or a 10x better camera, like the E-M10 or A6000, for just a bit more. There is no going around it, Nikon 1 V-series gear is waaaay overpriced.

And in the end,
People will buy what they want to buy....Not what we think they should buy....:)

This gets overlooked often as "we" try to impose what "we" like to others...(I myself am guilty of this)...

Its a paradox but if this system doesnt gain widespread popularity, it wouldnt be economically viable for Nikon to continue with this product line.

Looking at your photos, I think if you were given a Kodak instamatic, you would still produce awesome pictures.
