Feedback White screens and site nonfunctional from tablet or phone

Amin

Hall of Famer
Several members have reported to me that the site is nonfunctional, rendering white screens instead of thread content, when visiting on a tablet (including iPad and Android) or phone.

I think it is related to DNS caching. A couple members solved this by switching to a different browser (eg, Dolphin browser). I think Tapatalk should work as well, once you re-add the site under the new name. I think time should clear this up since caches automatically clear after some time period, but it may accelerate the process if you can flush the dns for your device.

I have Chrome and Safari on my iPad. I've cleared everything I can find to clear from both of them, but still get blank screens after clicking on anything other than the front page, which I can refresh, but not move from. I haven't tried uninstalling Chrome and then reinstalling it yet - I don't think you can uninstall Safari...

Is there another browser you can download on the iPad just as a test? Do they have Firefox for iPad?

I just tried deleting and reinstalling Chrome, and rebooting the iPad. No good. Then I downloaded two free browsers, including "Foxbrowser" which claimes Firefox support/compatibility. Both of them still give me blank white screens beyond the home screen...

I think it must be something beyond caches if these brand new browsers can't handle it on a freshly re-booted tablet...

Work fine on my Macs, but no luck at all on the iPad...

Your other forum sites work fine in all of these browsers...

Ray, please try this if it's not too much trouble:

-Go to Settings
-Tap General
-At the bottom of the column tap Reset
-Choose Reset Network Settings

You will have to redo your Wifi setup, but it may work.

Nope. Not here either. I've tried three different wi-fi routers (deleted and re-installed connection) and my 'phone runs both WiFi and 4G - no dice. For the record, my affected devices are both Sony Xperia Z - tablet and phone. I request desktop site on the tablet, too.

On my Android phone using Next Browser, if I change User Agent from Mobile to Desktop, it fixes the problem for me. Can you change User Agent on an iPad?

I can't find any settings for "user agent". When I search for it on Google, I can find various utilities to change the user agent on the mac to mimic the ipad, but I can't find such a setting anywhere on the iPad....

On my Nexus 7, no problem in Chrome, neither on my Chromebook. But on the same version of Chrome on my phone (Galaxy S4), I get a white page - and the browser hangs on load, even if I switch to desktop view. It still does load in desktop view, and once it's displayed it's fully usable, though seemingly incomplete, even though I don't see where or why - anyhow, the progress bar doesn't reach 100%, whatever I try. However, once I'm logged in, which is possible, everything seems fine - with one exception that might be significant: Pull-down menus don't work in Chrome on Android; I'm pretty sure that they did work before.

This points at a JS glitch - maybe some library/resource that isn't called upon correctly, affecting JS functionality as a whole, which would explain the failures in displaying for specific devices that are dependend on correct script execution (like mobile devices!). The likely culprit would be paths - some absolute still pointing to the old domain, maybe? Or if a central repository for the various forums is used, that could be the source of the problem (no pun intended ...). I don't know enough about vBulletin to be sure about the latter approach, though.

EDIT: Two additional pieces of information: The forum word filter kills the name of a popular scripting language for the web, which makes the exchange a bit troublesome ;) Anyway, the mobile site works on Android in Dolphin Jetpack (the next generation of the Dolphin browser).

[moved here from general introduction of PL thread]

I'm still getting an all white screen as soon as I go from the front page to any other page of PL. Android tablet (Nexus 7), with both Chrome and Firefox. The mobile layout gives me the same result, the only difference being that I can load the "today" page as well as the front page.

(EDIT) on chrome, clicking on the three little squares to the right of the url and then clicking "request desktop site" fixes my problems! All works fine now!:yahoo:

Apart from the inability to use the pull-down parts of the menu which is consistently affecting my Android devices in all browsers (I have now tried Chrome, Dolphin Jetpack and Firefox on the S4 and the Nexus 7), I can use the forum without any trouble. This may or may not be related to the fact that it's quite some time since I last visited SeriousCompacts on one of those devices - I'm not sure. I still think there's some problem with paths - and it's possible it's a DNS problem as Amin suspected earlier.

Amin, if it's any help, I had no technical problems with the renamed site yesterday. Not even last night, NYT. But this morning - after you changed the site logo at the upper right of the page - is when I began having problems. I'm logged in via my iMac at home right now - using the same home network that my iPad runs through.
