Can I please have your advice.

We know that the 42 mp sensor will yield great detail.

If I crop to the equivalent of 50mm and 70mm focal lengths what amount of mp will the 50mm crop and 70mm crop yield.

I say this as this new camera could effectively become your versatile 35, 50, 70 mm equivalent.

Thanks,

Adam.

A quick 'back of an envelope' calculation gives the following:-

50mm ---> 29.7mp

70mm ---> 21.2mp

If I'm right, that does look rather promising... :)
I don't think that's right. 70mm would be half the width AND half the height, so it should be more like 10.5mp, and the 50 would be in the neighborhood of 15mp. These are just guesses, but I think that's how it works. All of which is slightly confounded by the RX1 lens not being an actual 35mm - it's more like 32 or even 31.5, so the starting point for the calculations is lower...

Hmmmm... yes, I think you're right (that I'm wrong, that is :)).

I was a bit too quick out of the blocks, there. Time to go away and think about this properly...:D

Does the RX1Rii have a convenient in-camera crop? That you can frame in advance?

Hasn't been part of the announcement - it doesn't really sound like something Sony would do, but who knows. Shutter speed control in the auto-ISO setup is something Sony didn't do AT ALL until their most recent releases, and suddenly they do it as well as anyone. I'm hoping the new RX1 will also have a memory for manual focus distance and maybe a more permanent electronic distance scale (rather than one that only shows when you're turning the ring). But I'm not holding my breath. The variable strength anti-aliasing filter sounds like the really huge technical innovation in this camera - another Sony development that everyone will start using soon enough...

42.2MP has 18.8MP 1.5x crop, 10.6MP 2x crop... I think RX1 has a 50mm jpg crop, but not with raw option... A7(R) models have the 1.5x apsc mode with raw, but not on the RX1R II most probably...

They have 4:3 and 1:1 view options on the MII, which might increase the focal length. 1:1 is nearly 28MP ~ 1.23x crop. If you crop 1:1 view in 3:2 it gives approx 1.5x crop, not perfect but at least gives 50mm range...

I will see if I can make it to the photoplus next weekend...
