Finally a manufacturer is making a compact camera w/ 1" sensor + a zoom longer then 100mm...

During the 2016 CES show, Panasonic will announce a new Lumix DMC-TZ100 compact camera with 1" sensor. Here are the basic specifications:
  • 20.1MP 1" sensor
  • 9.1-91mm f/2.8-5.9 lens (25-250mm equivalent)
  • The official announcement in Europe is on January 5th, 2016

I think this is a different alternative to RX100/Canon gx5/7/9 variants which have zooms 24-70/100 range with similar to faster lenses... All the other other ultra zooms are big, nearly small dslr sized... This is an interesting camera assuming the Leica lens will be good/decent for 10x zoom +fast Panasonic af/electronics... The lens is f/3.5-8 in m43 terms, a little slower then standard m43 10x 3.5/4-5.6 zooms, not bad given the range...

Interesting - I bought the TZ70 this year so will not upgrade. Finally a competitor for the RX100?

If the EVF is any good, and it shoots RAW, I'm in...just what I've been waiting for. The RX100's limited zoom range has put me off from re-buying one. I like my TZ60 a lot but it's pretty poor in low light (anything above ISO 400 really).

I would be extremely surprised if it didn't offer raw. What was the most recent camera with anything over a 1/2.3" sensor that did not offer raw? It doesn't require any separate controls, could be just a menu option.

I only use the EVF for framing so I'm just glad to see one included. This could be like the Stylus 1 with enough bump in all around IQ to be really tempting. It would certainly be a helluva Singles in January camera.

Edit: I went to Rhotorumors to check it out. First comment says "that f/6 is death however". Really? That looks like a little body with that zoom range and a 1 inch sensor. I'd like to see it next to the RX10.

We already have 1" sensor Sony RX100 III/IV f1.8-2.8 and Canon GX5/7 with 24-100 f1.8-2.8 which are similar to what LX8 would be. I am glad Panasonic went to longer zoom lens.
If they ever come out with an LX8 with this sensor....

GM5 has a similar evf and small size limits its use, but usually I use it for framing as af is very fast. Hopefully they will release the camera soon for the Jan singles:)

What I'd like is an LX8 and a TZ100 sharing identical sensors, controls and batteries, basically the serious compact version of the 2-zoom DSLR setup. I could travel the world with just those two cameras and a single charger and not have to switch my brain every time I swapped cameras.

GM5 might be close enough and you can have faster m43 primes with it:

GM5 discontinued, maybe gm7 will be more similar to TZ100...

According to nikonrumors.com, Nikon will launch 3 different 1"sensored compacts in early 2016: with 18-50mm eq f/1.8-2.8 lens, with 24-85mm eq f/1.8-2.8 lens, and with 24-500 eq f/2.8-5.6 lens. It doesn't say anything definitively about the layout and other features, except that they'll be "always in your bag" sized, and might have hotshoe and/or optional EVF. We'll have to wait and see if the price and features are attractive, but in concept, I like the idea of such a range.

I have the Panny 14/2.5 20/1.7, 12-35/2.8 and Oly 45/1.8. But I want a two zoom setup so I'm not on the dusty side of road in the fading light swapping lenses.

And I'm often on the side of road with two different camera systems (Pentax K, Nikon 1, Pentax Q, Panny M43) and every time I go from one to the other it takes a second to reacquaint myself with the controls (even between two similar cameras like a K-3 and K-5), particularly when I need to menu dive to set a custom white balance, time lapse setting, flash setting, or AF mode. That's a potential shot lost as the sun is setting and the light is just right and you're asking a fellow rider to make a couple of passes down a road as you lie on the ground trying to get the shot just right.

This happens to me often enough that I want a setup that doesn't get in the way, that lets me capture the moment, not the moment after.

And since I'm dreaming, I want identical batteries. I'm tired of this taking up way to much space in my backpack or small motorcycle luggage:

Well, if we're dreaming, how about a usb-c in-camera charging option, and the same for your phone, tablet, and laptop... then you could use 1 cable for all your electronic devices, and charge them at whatever voltage and speed the device can handle...

Seriously, starting in 2016, I will only buy devices with USB-C.
