Fuji Fuji XP-90 waterproof camera images

Just starting to see what this camera can do. There's a slight barrel distortion from what I can see, at wide angles at least, but overall I'm impressed by the detail from this little pocket camera, which has a folded optical zoom lens that's internal only.

Every March / April, I hope that some of the camera companies will start combining the trend for higher-quality, larger-sensor compacts, with the trend for rugged / waterproof cameras to be among the most popular compacts. So far, no real luck, Olympus' and Leica's best efforts nonwithstanding (TG-x series and X-U). Still, I'm a big fan of the waterproof compacts we already have on the market. Looking forward to seeing how you'll get along with this one.

It will be interesting to see what you get out of this camera, Dale. Over the past few years, Fuji's XP cameras haven't fared well in various comparison tests of waterproof cameras. But the XP's always looked like a great value to me. Still, I'm with Bart: A tough/waterproof camera with a one-inch sensor, please!

When a camera is made in large quantities like most of the small mirrorless (fixed or changeable lens) cameras from Nikon, Fuji, Panasonic, Canon et al, the expense in making them waterproof or at least highly weather resistant is very minimal in the overall cost. The biggest obstacle to this is what people call "bean counters", who along with their legal duties like to shave every last penny off the the cost. The XP90 isn't an expensive camera like the Panasonic ZS100 or LX100, Nikon DL18-50, Canon G7x, etc. - so the relative expense of weatherproofing those would be a lot less than for the XP90. Someone needs to set a trend in the enthusiast compact camera market.

It should be easy to do. Funny thing is, I like the more rounded, rubbery or plastic-y feel of the XP90 body than I do the hard metallic and squarish case of the Panasonic ZS100, for example. It's almost hard to believe that there aren't more quality 'sport' cameras for high quality stills with one-inch sensors available, but it must mean that the big camera makers are unwilling to take unnecessary risks now. The XP90 design pretty much necessitates the non-extendable lens, which won't compete with the huge travel-zoom market for real (non-cellphone) cameras.

This ad-hoc portrait was shot at full zoom handheld at 1/8 second, so there is a slight blur.

The unfinished bridge. It sat unpainted for years, then finally someone decided to add color...

More pics from the little pocket waterproof Fuji:
1) Butterfly? Could be a moth - don't know.
2) I shot this church many times from a few angles, and oddly enough, this is one of the best I've gotten.
3) The objects here are 3/4 mile distant, and it's a bit much to ask from the little camera, so I did some "extra" processing, which gave it an almost posterized look.

Not an easy job for the little pocket Fuji XP-90. The egret had some red fringing around it, and some smear. Still, more than adequate for overall detail.

Not bad at all! I like the results better than what I'm getting from my Ricoh PX. That camera's saving grace is that the jpegs come out so flat, that they can stand a decent amount of processing.

I looked up the PX - unavailable. Then I found the G800 at nearly $1000. Finally I got a current model Ricoh waterproof, but it's hideous looking, so never mind that.

So Dale... are you going to try the X-90 underwater?

Not anytime soon. The local pro who does underwater here borrowed my Leica X-U, but his task fizzled that day, and he said he's going again within a week. So that's the one I'm waiting for.

More photos from the Fuji XP-90. I didn't realize the shutter speed was 1/12 second for the sunset image, since I was using regular Program mode. The content as it turned out was OK for that speed, with burst shooting. The bridge I've shot many times, but each time the colors vary, and this is my first with the XP-90, using the camera's 'Night' setting.

No. 1, sunset over river leading into Charleston harbor.
No. 2, high tide in the marsh next to the river.
No. 3, tourists on historical walking tour downtown.

Today's mix from the Fuji XP90 pocket waterproof camera. Two black & whites in the coffee shop that were suggested by another photographer, one harbor view near sunset, and another in my Home Sweet Home series. The latter was shot through a downtown window at night, and it may be a hotel or just a store, but I don't remember.

Today's adventure with the pocket Fuji is a few flower photos. I don't know the names, but in the first image, the red/yellow leaves remind me most of cactus, like I saw at Bolsa Chica in the L.A. area. The second example grows on lots of trees in the Charleston SC area. The third flower is common in most respects, but the first I've seen with the green separators between each petal. I did one alteration to this image, but as it was very minor I'll leave that to the viewers.
