Sony Original RX1 vs RX1r2 rendering, which is better?

I'm very curious to hear anyone's opinion on how different versions of the RX1, the original and the mark 2 render.

I had the original RX1 until recently and loved it.
Sold it to get the new version but...
I find the RX1 to be very different than the new mark 2

I find the R2 to be rather sterile.
Some photos seem TOO sharp, while others are ok but seem to be missing some of the POP of the original.

I would love to buy the R2 for all the upgrades.
But I have a special project that just needs that special sauce.

Am I deluded?
Is there some merit to what my eyes see?

Can the AA filter be used to create less aggressive details?
Or do many users over sharpen the R2?
Is the POP missing?

Or is the 42 mp sensor just not up to the original rendering style.

Love hear some ideas on the subject.

Well simple answer..... Yes, you are deluded ;-)

Ive had both and the original RX1 had incredible picture quality and the style of rendering you mention.

The Mark II version is more of the same with bags more detail, much better autofocus etc etc. Its not perfect but its the 1 camera I will never let go of.... Its still got the beautiful rendering of the original... in short...its superb!!! Im getting emotional just talking about it... :)

If you loved the original and youve got the funds, its a no brainer....

Enjoy

Thanks for the reply.
Do you happen to still have to original?
would love to see tow raw files together for comparison.

I have been looking at file from all the RX1's on flickr.
and to me the RX1 destroys the mark2

It has all the special sauce smothering its photos.
It as snap, crackle and POP
smooth butter rendering with 3d pop and enough sharpness to fix attention.

The mark 2 tens to look flatter to be with less separation
Overall details seems to flatten images and the smooth butter becomes more of a crackled surface.
transitions don't look at delightful to me.

I share your love for the RX1 series NO doubt.
But would love to be certain because as it stands I'm scouring eBay for a new Original flavor RX1

despite that I would LOVE to get all the upgrades to the series and need them.
but if the camera can't capture what I have so gotten used to
its the Original only for me.

anyone have both or a valid comparison of photos..?

I had the rx1 but could not afford the rx1m2, so I couldn't compare them. I loved the rx1, but sold it to a buddy. Now I find myself with an A7ii, and I honestly still want to try out the rx1m2 at some point.

I got some stunning shots on the rx1, and I felt like that camera handled highlights (for what I was shooting) amazingly.

Maybe you can get your friend to give it back to you.
I would try that.
I don't think the Mark 2 version has the secret sauce of the RX1
New sensor has really changed the rendering, IMO

If you want less detail, can't you just shoot it at a lower resolution?

Set it for Small or Medium file size.

Hey Luke
I don't think you can change the resolution unless you are in JPG mode and do an in camera crop.
I don't like to shoot Jpg.

I don't think that there another way to change the resolution.

but its great idea.
maybe there is a way?

He sold it after buying the EVF, but he just recently got a steal on another one so who knows what might happen down the road. We end up trading gear all the time.

Lucky guy, I m looking for a steal on a RX1
If you know anyone let me know.

I just saw several between about $1000-1400 on eBay, FWIW. Down converting in post would have the same effect as shooting lower res to begin with, but I agree that if you don't like the rendering, that's not gonna make a difference.

Hi Ray.
Yes, I am eBay everyday trying to get a Rx1 I saw a few sell at under a grand, that would be great.
But i may have to get a more expensive version if I want one that has been well cared for.

I am considering an Rx1r
but still like the original best.
I recall you saying that you some differences even in the rx1r version.

Yes Downconverting wold lower res, but as you said it would have no effect on rendering that resolution.
It's baked in.

Thanks Ray

since the lens is exactly the same, I guess I'd be very interested how the files would look different once the mk. 2 files are down-converted to the same resolution. I'm sure it depends on the algorithm used, but really shouldn't they be the same?

They don't look the same to me.
Resolution, detail, rendering is baked in.
The mark 2 has a new sensor.

I think that the added resolution and sharpness interrupts the rendering and creates a different look than the original.
I find the sharpness of the original more than enough while creating wonderful textures and rendering.

Mark 2 has many wonderful features.
but I want the secret sauce and to my eyes, thats the original.

BUT yes I would love to see both together for comparison.

I remember when the A7RII first came out, people talked about a "milky" look to the files and this would certainly seem to me to be a good description. However, after a lot of trial and error I am happy enough with the output I'm getting at the moment but I would have to agree that the A7R and RX1 produce a different look. I would download some RX1 II files and play with them as much as you can before deciding, you might find that you are equally happy and the faster af has got to be a bonus.

That really good advise!

I agree my reservation about AF is the reason I sold my lovely rx1 in the first place.
It was the inability to get the shots I wanted due to AF being so DOG slow.
and the additional new attributes are very important like EYE AF.

I hadnt actually though of trying to find some raw files from the rx1r2
and trying to see what I can get out of them.

Thank you so much for such a good idea.
now if i can just find some.

And YES, Milky is a good word to use for the look.
I find the added rez and sharpness tends to interrupt that flow.

Edit: well got some raw files, the high ISO is amazing,
but as to making them look like the RX1, ?
I have no idea lol

these files don't look milky to me.
Ok they are starting to look more milky...
i can't find the LR milky levels. lol

I was actually thinking of getting an A7r2 or the 3 when it comes out as I have been looking at those files and some are very nice.
It would be perhaps better than a rx1r2 since you can add lenses.
and its cheaper

and the rx1 would be the MILKY file creator.
