Well, at least he waited until his third paycheck...

...before FedEx showed up with this. Now I have all these sensors in the den.

Suddenly I feel VERY, VERY old. I can't imagine having little television screens that close to your face can be good for anything. I remember when we were little, our parents would tell us not to sit so close to the TV (we were probably 3 feet away!)

But I'm sure he's having a great time.

Just think....a hundred years from now his grandkids will look at this and think that technology is so old-fashioned....LOL.

I used a really good VR headset in our visualization lab. We were testing how well I could manipulate a protein molecule using the head set and a pair of paddles that acted as manipulators. I dropped the protein and the damned thing actually starting bouncing away. I instinctively stepped forward to chase/grab it and Dave, the director of the lab, had to grab me before I hit the wall. I tried the ones that are a cell phone in a goggle frame and, while not as good as a dedicated set, they are surprisingly effective. I wonder how long before they are commonly used in science classes. I do have ask if Dad has tried these yet. That's an advantage of having kids.

The sensor placement defined an "area" in physical movement terms that is overlapped by my desk edge (our desks are adjacent). He reached for an object in one of the games and his hand and controller ended up being blocked by my desk. I have yet to try it, he's been working a lot of hours (partly to pay up for the headset), so I'll try it out as when he and I are both home and awake. I did have a chance to try a lower-end VR experience while I was traveling, but I suspect it's nothing compared to a dedicated unit like the Vibe.

Obsolescence - well, the word is that HTC is thinking about getting out of the VR business. As successful as the headset may be, it's not turning as much of a profit as they thought.

I tried a VR headset about 2 years ago. I got a bad headache with pain in a different way than I ever had. Not interested in trying again. Erk.
