SiJ 2018 - Day Seventeen.

I thought I would photograph these people before they left town. The pond has dried out, mostly, and theres no sign that we will have any rain to speak of, before winter. I'll post the pond in Outtakes.

I came very close to abandoning this image and going out again to seek another subject. The shot was taken not long after sunrise and the foreground was still in deep shadow due to slightly higher ground between my position and the sun. In the end I managed to "rescue" the shot with an inverted graduated filter to lighten the foreground. I also increased the saturation of the colour image to 100% before conversion to monochrome. Although the colour image looked appalling that enabled me to retain tonal separation between the blue sky and the flecks of small cloud which were the remnants of a passing shower. The shot might have been better attempted in the afternoon but it was a long walk, not from the village you can see behind, but from a hamlet about a mile to the right. It could have also benefited from more prominent clouds in the background, never mind, such is life.

You made me think of that scene in The Return of the King when Pippin lights the Beacons of Gondor. One of my favorites sequences from those movies.
 
Today was rather spectacular - not specifically because of the images I got in the end, but because we had really challenging weather; the second major winter storm in two weeks moved away to make way for the third one following on its tail! I went out toward the end of the narrow gap between them - so I even got hit be the first couple of ferocious icy blasts of the new one, but nevertheless managed to grab a couple of sunbeams before the weather turned grim again. I had to suffer for it, though - the frozen rain stung like needles on my way back inside. It was still good fun - just not something I'm eager to repeat too soon.
This was just before the second (or third) storm - the sun appeared suddenly, yet only for a couple of minutes, sweeping over the frozen meadows (it's a thin layer of ice you see - not snow!). In the background, the new front's already moving in!

Sunny again so I went a bit further afield to this little church at Shelland. Probably only half the size of the one I visited yesterday

Very windy going out on the bike, gusting at 35 mph but flew home. Shelland is not a village, rather a collection of houses and well off the beaten track. Few people even know it's there. For anyone interested there is a write up here

Sara serves libations and meals to us hungry and weary travelers at this hotel in Ohio. Since I was in meetings from 7a-6p today, this was the only person besides my client and team members that I interacted with all day. So after having dinner, I ask her to let take her photo. She obliged but was a bit embarrassed about it. I was not full of energy and didn't put much effort into but she does have a great smile!

Day Seventeen - the wrong time to be awake

I didn’t have much time for photos today as I had to walk to the train station. Actually, I had to run to keep up with my hubby who was also catching the train. Only took a couple of snaps of the snowy trees as I sped past but none of them were worthy on their own merit. As I had to walk back late after work both opportunities and enthusiasm to find another shot had deserted me. So (and I blame the seventies pop music of questionable taste blasting through my headphones for this) but I played with the images I had. Strictly speaking this picture is a hybrid - trees shot with the lx100 and a photo of me with the canon g7x mark 2 - then double exposed in Snapseed. Anyway, way passed my bedtime here - I should have been asleep a couple of hours ago.
