Blackgum, Nyssa sylvatica. A slow growing tree, on old specimens the bark can become dark and blocky, resembling alligator hide. The foliage is one of our earliest to begin changing in Autumn, slowly spreading across the tree to a brilliant crimson (sometimes mixed with orange or purple), and the female trees display a drupe that turns dark purple when ripe.
