Sad news indeed. What a voice, and I'm sure she was an amazing woman to know.

Deep inside I think I'm soul - as in Motown soul, so it's really sad to hear news like these. And there's not much new talent to fill the void left by these talents. Was hopeful about Amy, but she gone and went ahead.

Etta wasn't anything like Motown - she was part of the same Chess Records Chicago sound that also handled Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, and others. A lot less smooth and "pop" than Motown - much more rooted in the blues. All of Etta's recordings in her hey-day were on either Chess or one of their subsidiaries, like Argo. She was a good one for sure. I saw her open for somebody once, but I don't recall who, probably in the late '70s through mid-80s when I was going to a LOT of shows...

I hear this. While I've always enjoyed the Motown sound... my true love lies more toward the earthier Chicago and Memphis sounds. Chess/Stax/Atlantic, etc.
