The new firmware is out but seems not to have addressed the issue of "Orbs"

Fuji says that the ...
Blooming (White disk) phenomena, which can be observed in EXR AUTO mode, is reduced.

so nothing then about the Orbs that can be observed in every other mode.

However they have given us a programmable RAW button to shut us up.
What a company!

Thanks for the heads up - I hadn't seen the new firmware yet. Since I didn't have a problem with the orbs (I found 'em in two shots so far, one where they mattered, one where they didn't), I'm fine with that part, so I'll just take the programmable raw button and say thank you. I hope they just give us that on the X-100 and fix the auto-ISO and that camera will leave nothing left for me to desire...

nippa, thank you for showing this image with your attempt to recreate the "orbs" as you posted over here: https://www.photographerslounge.org/f63/fuji-x10-white-dots-lol-5075/index5.html#post63621 Glad to know that things are looking better to you. Here's to some sunshine coming your way soon!

Thanks BB
As I mentioned in my PM I've been playing around with bright light sources to create orbs in P mode at ISO 100 and I'm happy with what I've seen.
Perhaps Fuji did something beyond EXR Auto but were too shy to tell us.

General feeling on DPReview seems pessimistic and I expected to feel that way too but I can't be on the basis of what I've seen so far :)

I just saw a couple of examples on DPReview from a guy who took back to back longish exposure night shots off of his balcony, with tripod, into direct light sources. Both showed orbs, but they were noticeably less bad with the new firmware. I still wouldn't buy it if I did a lot of that kind of shooting. I'd still buy it if I don't. I'd expect that for every 10 shots I get with orbs (which at my present rate, could take a year or two), maybe a couple fewer will be bad enough to notice or to matter. I guess we'll see. I just did the upgrade and its nice to reclaim that raw button for something useful. But now I have to remember all of my settings...

I may be jumping in too soon here, but I think that focus beep can be silenced while the hot shoe will trigger a flash.
Looks like macro will work with external flash now too. Just confirmed that.
Those two changes are very useful. I didn't like that beep! I do like to light closeups!
I have done a couple portraits and the beeping noise was a distraction.
The upgrade does require a reset of menu preferences.
As for the orbs, that remains to be seen. I just didn't find myself in situations where that was common.
Now the raw button can do something I want it to do!
Overall a good step.
Cheers.

I remember seeing a website where they compared the X-10 orbs to other cameras' results. The M-9 rendition of specular reflections looks very similar to the X-10. I have to admit that is till don't really notice them. Already thinking about what I will do with the raw button. What are the rest of you planning to do?

drd,
I always read that the high ISO and noise is improved/reduced after an upgrade on the Leicas.
Thought about a tongue and cheek mention here, but then thought better.
Like the Raw button for film simulation.

I'm a bit confused (not that uncommon, BTW). I was referring to rendition of specular reflections (the white orb problem) on the X-10 and M9, not noise/high iso issues.

Film simulation is a good idea.

That's awesome!! I hate focus beep too, but I do like the "fake" shutter click. So we can have one without the other now, right? :) Can't wait to try it out.

Yeah, I went back and forth on the fn button between ISO (when I wasn't using auto) and film simulation. Now I have ISO on the fn and film simulation on the raw. On the X100 I almost never take ISO off of auto (because its such a hassle to switch) so I go between the ND filter and film simulation on the fn button. If they'd free up the raw button on that, I'd be happy. If they'd fix the damn auto-ISO thing, I'd be ecstatic!

I put AF mode on Fn1 and Face Detection on Fn2 (aka RAW), just like I did with the X-S1.

Btw, even when reassigned, the RAW button will still work as a RAW button in Playback mode, so no worries here.

Thanks I hadn't realised that ; now that makes Fn2 really useful.

Well the sun has finally come out at home and sad to say it's clear that Fuji have made no progress with the orb problem.
Up to now I've not been that bothered but we're off on a cruise round Hawaii with a stopover in LA during March so I anticipate issues when we're there.
I do love this X10 but I can't see me buying Fuji again as this is my second bad experience.....the first Fuji was a Z10 for my wife which was positively the worst digicam of all time.

After the update to 1.03, when in EXR (via control dial), there is no "custom" view of the LCD for me.

I'm not sure if there was "custom" view in EXR before the update. Can someone who hasn't updated to 1.03 check on that? Or does anyone remember if there was (or not) a "custom" view while on EXR mode?

Like you I can't remember what went before as I only used EXR Mode for backup shots and never saw an advantage.
I notice Custom Mode is still available in Auto though ; one quirky camera.

Fuji X10 firmware version 1.03 installed to Mac computer today, Fuji MB discrepancy;

Talked with Fujifilm today About this version ,1.03, install on my iMac. When I downloaded it to computer the required MB of the down load should be 24.6 MB, as/per Fuji Global info. And the printed info said if it did not have this MB rating to download again so tried it twice and the download files both times came up 25.9 MB.

So talked to Fuji and they said that the last month or so the Mac's were padding the download to 25.9 Mb, and Fuji in Japan was working on the situation. Fuji NJ USA told me to proceed with the file of 25.9 Mb downloaded SD card and said that the download would work fine even with the file reading 25.9 and not the required 24.6Mb as stated on their website. So with some trepidation,

Downloaded the SD card info into the camera and everything worked fine.

So just wanted to let Mac users know that the 25.9 Mb download is ok to install in the camera.

Thanks Dennis.
