Canon PowerShot G1 X Preview: 7. Compared to (Raw): Digital Photography Review

Looking at the RAW files, the G1X is superior to the GH2 and GX1 in high ISO, and maybe even a little bit better than the Canon T3i and the Nikon D5100. And it's about equal to the Fuji X100 and Pentax K-5. That's very impressive!!!

Looks like Canon has a good sensor in its hands (assuming that Canon is not applying noise reduction on the RAW file).

If the G1X just had a slightly faster lens, and a better OVF .... sigh.

From what I am seeing, if someone is going to buy an entry level DSLR (or a m4/3 camera) and never use anything but the kit lens, the G1X would be a better option.

I also looked at it but the price is still too high. With other options out there with changeable lenses and such I think people would give this a miss just because of the price.

OMD all the way perhaps?

That's how it looks like, unless Leica is going to surprise us in September. But mft has some exciting lenses and the OMD looks quite convincing to me.
On another note, just amazing how quickly it got quite around the NEX7, is anybody on this forum shooting with one?

I'd love to try a NEX7, but that thing is harder to find than a 50 Lux!

where did you get this?

From the link on the 1st page. set to iso 800 and look at the zoomed image. And BTW, when i said badly I was referring only to comparisons between canon G1x, 600d, oly EP3, canon g12. I'ts the worst between the four.

Edit: Even at iso 100 I can see purple. I don't know if you see it. I'll post a screenshot.

A good start for an all in one large sensor camera from Canon, but tiny VF, slow lens and slowish AF require too many compromises.

The lens is faster than most (if not all) kit lenses of DSLRs, has a sensor which is not much smaller than those of DSLRs, and the camera is much smaller than DSLRs. It's a camera for people who already own a DSLR and want a small camera without compromising image quality too much.

Poor G1X! No love! Hehe!

I think the answer to your second post is contained in your first! I fully agree that IF someone was going to buy an entry level DSLR with ONLY the kit lens, this becomes a compelling option. But around a photo enthusiast forum, that's a huge IF. And, really, you do pay more and give up the AF speed and decent (or half decent) DSLR OVF. Not that a lot of people who are buying an entry level DSLR with just a kit lens are thinking all that hard about those factors before they buy the camera. I agree there should be a good size market for a camera like this - I just don't think a lot of it hangs out on forums like this!

I wonder if Canon is going to start using this new sensor on more compact bodies. Can you imagine a S90/95/100 sized camera with this sensor and a fixed 35/1.8 equivalent lens? I guess the lens would be too big to keep the body that small eh? It'll be interesting to see what Canon comes up with, if anythig at all.
