Out this afternoon with the X100 and in between rain, shine I managed to capture a few images that I like.

Did you use any polariser filters or anything? You seem to have gotten some great cloud detail in the sky, or did you apply a graduated filter in post?

Hi James,

No Polariser and no Grad, these are as they were and a case of metering from an area that maximised sky and allowed me to bring back foreground detail.

The X100 metering is superb and coupled with that Fujinon lens allows a huge amount of detail to be captured.

Of course Silver Efex Pro2 allows me to maximise the sky effect by using the HDR setting and increasing Structure as well but without the Raw image in the first place, nothing would be possible so Fuji have created a superb tool.

Stunning, Ian - and your black and white tones are exceptionally well done! If I had to chose, I'd be torn between the last two...as my favorite. Fortunately, I get to see them all.:drinks:

Thank you all again for the kind comments.

The X100 certainly can deliver the goods and it's size, weight and nice tactlle operation make it easy to use in "Auto human mode" as opposed to "Auto camera mode", I can set the camera up as I want it and just pull it up quickly to me eye to compose, allow autofocus to do it's thing (I am convinced this is a fair bit faster since updating to firmware 1.13) then press that silent shutter - job done.

I also find that I am using the X100 as I did my Leica Rangefinder and by that I mean, I am previsualising the end result a lot more, being more thoughtful with my settings and in turn shooting fewer images but having a higher percentage of keepers.

I have also got to the point now where I have turned off the post shoot image display so that I have to make the camera display the image taken only if I want to check it, this again helps reduce overall shot to shot time and allows me more time to look for the next image.

All in all I am sure you can gather that I am delighted with the performance of this camera and the end results, as long as people take the time & effort to understand the camera and it's idiosyncrasies it will provide end results that really please.

As I read somewhere, does the "eye", ability to see and capture, come with this camera? If so I in danger of selling what ever it takes to get one! Beautiful work.

Alas Steve they do not but the camera certainly encourages thoughtful photography and rewards that with satisfying results. I am sure there is nothing wrong with your eye or associated skill set and I am sure you get a great deal of satisfaction from your photography.

Thank you though for the kind remarks.

Sorry for delay in responding - I keep a UV filter on the lens at all times and even though the X100 has a built in ND filter I did not use it or any other type of filter.

Once I have processed the basics in PS and use SFX (Silever Efex Pro) for my B&W conversion and for these images I used the full HDR option as it allows me to bring out the full effect of the sky, it does need some additional structure adding but worth it.
