You can check local craigslist, forums like fred miranda or the used store shops like B&H, Adorama, and KEH's used sections. Craigslist prices also vary but you can negotiate and see what you are buying.
Any particular models you are looking for?
I have been able to score quite a few decent compacts at my local Goodwill. The Kiev and the XA were found on eBay but the rest of these were under $10 at Goodwill or garage sales.
I was looking for a Yashica T4 (non zoom, non date) but now that Kodak is raising it's film prices I think i'm going to hold off unless I get find one that's affordable.

Good Willies, The Salvation Army. and a hundred small and large thrift stores! Auctions, pawn shops, yard sales, newspapers(ad's),word of mouth, and camera sites! A good camera, like a good picture, is where you find it.
Thanks! I am embarrassed to admit this, but I can't find the R1. I think my daughter might have it in her room, like my Stylus that went missing for months.
I'd also offer putting the word out to friends and family that you like to take photographs and still use film cameras. Many people realize they will no longer shoot film and are happy to pass the camera along to someone who does. A friend recently gave me a nearly new Contax TVS II that had been sitting in a drawer for years. Another friend gave me her dad's old Spotmatic SP and a collection of Super Takumar lenses to go with it. I'd be a fool to turn down free gear.
