Little ones, big ones, old ones, new ones
black ones, white ones, brown ones, blue ones
be they short or be they tall
I must confess I love them all

p.s. - I also like Dr. Seuss

McLuke,

We, and our generation, are shaped by the good demented doctor - we are but Children of Suess. Between that and being raised by the original Sesame Street - you know where Big Bird imagined Mr Snuffleupagus, Bert and Ernie shared digs....and a bath, Mr Hooper was still kickin' about and we had tickle-me nobodies but relied on the gospel of the street delivered by Oscar - a stinky bum who hung out in a garbage can....oh man I'm starting to realise why my mind's where it's at most times :alcoholic:

Mark, it never dawned on me that you had Sesame Street over there as well. The one that kids get now is garbage.....and Oscar wouldn't approve of it. I think I actually heard that the Cookie Monster doesn't eat cookies anymore? Effing ridiculous if you ask me.

It's been a LONG time since I thought about Mr. Hooper....may he rest in peace.:sad010:

Amen brother!
It was my bread and butter. Still don't pronounce my Z's right ;) Some say this was step one in global Americanisation....but hey, let's not spiral down into politics. Let's instead entertain child fantasies of helping Maria making right anything broken down at the fix-it-shop, finding what thing was not like the other, listening to the aliens from DubDubDub, and hanging with Grover and his mate...you know the guy who could only sound out nouns..."No, I didn't want a bang, bang, bang, but a whooho, whooho,..."

Oh heady days...

come and share....

I sort went off topic, but now I'm keen to hear others' memories of the old PE (pre-Elmo) Sesame Street and maybe even share experiences of how it shaped your world....well what little remains that years of therapy hasn't wiped out!....

I didn't realise how much Bert's buddy must have resonated with me as a kid. Could only really do baths with my rubber ducky - actually I had a few back-ups - and I clearly remember an occasion where I got a little over-directive with my poor mother about how that new top was NOTHING LIKE ERNIE'S!!!

No LP though...that would have been gold!!! - though I assume it'd probably go for nicks in your store?
Unlike a mate of mine who recently spent way too much on an original 'Thunderbird No. 2' toy. I had one as a kid - loved it until I lost No. 4 down the drain of the bath. If I held onto it intact, with the box, I'd have me another M-lens today ;)

Now I am feeling REALLY old. No TV til I was 14 (and it was B&W), and certainly no Sesame Street.

Well Sue feel free to take us down your memory lane. God knows I've meandered all over the shop....soon enough I'll be writing an exegesis on Hanna Barbara vs. Looney Tunes cartoons. Seems like Gen-X or the Nintendo generation were the first brought up by (as opposed to 'with') television

Sue, this conversation shouldn't make you feel old.

Feeling old should make you feel old. (I think I'm gonna get slapped here)

But seriously, you're only as old as you think you are. I think I'm about 12 (with the aches and pains of man 6 times that age)

I wasn't a sesame street child though my neighbors were, so when playing at their house sometimes I saw it. I remember the Muppet Show more vividly, which came after it. The grumpy old men in the balcony, Beaker, the Swedish Chef etc.. And I don't mean the even later muppet movies. This was the corny show that had human guests on it which was weird watching them interact and yet.. almost normal.

Oh thank you Kristen. So why no Sesame Street? No family TV? Not allowed by the parents?

But thank you!!! The Muppet Show, oh yeah! Waldolf and Statler up in the peanut gallery. Oh man that takes me back. Never warmed to Kermit or Miss Piggy. But poor ol' Fozzie Bear and Gonzo.....they were my faves. Not withstanding the band with guys like Animal and the Doctor, oh yeah!!!!!

Yeah, and I'll best honest I still draw similarities between people I meet and Jim Henson creations. I have a guy at work that reminds me of the American Eagle (new reader) and a regular client who is Beaker's offsider...you know the scientist with no eyes?

By the time I saw it at the neighbors house I already knew my alphabet and how to count, add, etc. Sesame Street just didn't do it for me. I thought it was kinda dumb LOL. I watched cartoons instead, Scooby Doo, the Jetsons, the Flintstones [could name a LOT].. Oh and hey Speed Racer rocked! Go Speed Racer Go!!!

Oh yeah there are a lot of people that remind me of muppets. There are a lot of people that look like their pets too ever notice that? :D

When I was small, and TV first came to Australia in 1956 (IIRC), we would go on vacation to relatives in Sydney, and only Mr Wilburs, who owned the shop a few doors down, had a TV, so my cousins and I were allowed to go to watch the Mickey Mouse Show with the Wilburs boys, on a Saturday afternoon. I was amazed by it all.

By the time we got our own TV in 1964 (Wagga Wagga, NSW) it was RinTinTin, and F-Troop all the way :) At 14 I wasn't really much interested in kid shows...much...

My body is a lot older than my chronological age. I look at my peers and wonder how I got to be like this. Genetics can be cruel. In my mind, I'm 30, but you know what they say, the mind may be willing, but the body... etc.

I reckon that's you being hard on yourself Sue.

Me? I'm a pre-teen stuck in the body of well-over teen, who still dresses like his in his teens (well the clothes I would have worn as a teen).
So really I think I'm a VW Golf R, when the body is actually an old Passat 1500 fastback, but to anyone with eyes it just looks like a derailed dodge'em car is creaking on by

Sue, I checked out your blog the other day.... sounds like you're fighting back against the genetics.... way to go!

On the subject of the Muppets, the TV show was great, the movies were crap. Kermit is scholcky and Miss Piggie the WORST. I do a fairly good one-man show re-creating Beaker and Dr. Bunson Honeydew. Statler and Waldorf is who I want to become. I was Animal post high school...probably more gonzo these days (with a hint of Foziie Bear).

I had an LP of Sesame Street and the tunes I remember with great joy are "I love Trash" (my fave), "C is for Cookie (that's good enough for me)" and the classic "Rubber Ducky".

"Anything dirty or dingy or dusty. Anything rotten or ragged or rusty! Yes, I love trash!"

Rubber Ducky of course is a classic.
