This is my latest rescue. My car is in the shop so I'm having to use the city park. On our way back this AM this little thing was running down the middle of a residential street getting chased by a cat. It was quacking away at the top of it's lungs. I was several blocks from the city park where there is a duck pond. I looked for the Mom but couldn't find her. I don't know what I'm going to do. I'm going to need my bathtub at some point. The dogs like it. The cat WAS NOT happy. It went under a car and just glared at us. Fuji X10 to make officially a photography thing. But if anyone knows what to do with baby ducks I'd really appreciate any help. THANKS!!!!!

I live in a really small town outside of Austin, TX so there is no zoo. The duck pond has several moms with babies. They do wander up in the residential neighborhoods. I think this one just go separated but I'm afraid if I just drop it off at the pond it won't make it. I already have 3 rescue dogs and a rescue cat. I REALLY don't need a duck..... My cat, Josephine, just looked at it and walked off. She's 12 years old and lazy..... The dogs are fascinated by it. They keep going in the bathroom and watching it in the tub. Hugo licked it and lifted it out of the water.

I would suggest the local animal rescue. You don't need another animal and every animal baby has different needs. From my couple minutes of research, no bread and no poultry feed. mushy fresh fruits and vegetables and access to fresh water for drinking until you can get it to the proper place.

THANK YOU. The bread was a very good tip. I have to go get my car out of the shop then I'm going to try and deal with the baby duck. I'm going to put it in my cat carrier until I get back. It managed somehow to get out of the bathtub and is wandering around my living room. The dogs think it's just part of the family now.

Put it on Craigslist. That does not look like a mallard. I have someone coming today to pick up five baby ducks. If you can, go to the feed store and get a bag of crumbles. About nine bucks and you can give that to whoever comes to get the duck. Makes sure it's not medicated as that will kill a duck. They make medicated and un-medicated. That's what he/she will eat and you can put a bowl of water by it and it will go into the water immediately.

Just makes sure it's not too deep since when they are just a day or two old they can drown eventually especially if they get too cold.

I imagine it was separated from it's mother as it's up to the babies to keep up. And an older male duck will kill it too since they don't want to be bothered by babies. That's why it is not a good idea to let it loose in a park pond.

I've learned these things because I have a mallard female that is a duck making machine.

You are lucky to live in Taylor with the good BBQ they have there!

We do have a feed store here. There is a retired couple who live across from the park. They took in an Easter duck. It's basically their pet now. They tried really hard to get it to live with the other ducks at the pond. It now lives in their back yard. I just don't have the heart to ask them to take this one in.

Louis Mueller BBQ is really incredible. I managed to get it in a cat carrier. My parents are on their way over to take to me to get my car. The closest Honda dealership is in Round Rock so I've got a little trip ahead of me. The tumblers in my ignition switch got worn down. You wouldn't believe what it cost me to fix this. I had to get a new ignition switch, new keys, and some chip in that apparently keeps people from stealing my $15K beat up Honda Fit that is full of dog hair and mud. I couldn't give this car away. It's to end up costing my over $800. When I asked them at the dealership why they would put an anti-theft device on the cheapest model they make I just got a blank stare. Oh well...

Anyway, I have to do something with this duck. I've been calling the wildlife rescue number in Austin for the last 15 minutes but it's busy. The site said they are very busy. There was a really nice bird rescue place outside of Dallas.

And you are right about the ducks, they can be really mean. My dogs are terrified of the geese at the park. One of them pecked Hugo one time. He cuts a very wide swatch around them. :D

mmmmm......BBQ duck

I telling you Luke Louis Mueller BBQ is just beyond incredible. It's pretty famous. It's all wood fired in this brick oven they've had for I think 40+ years. No AC, you have to stand in line and when they are out of food they are just out. Usually by about 1 on Saturday they are sold out.

We had trouble with my Prius key. A new one is around 350 with 150 on top of that to program it. I managed to fix it myself. It's like how can a 500 dollar key ever justify the 500 dollar price.

I just got back from the Honda Dealership after a detour to treat Mom and Dad to lunch. Do you think Tractor Supply would have that duck food you mentioned? On the way out I a saw the Animal Control guy down the block. I went down and talked to him. He was looking for the mother duck too. Apparently Mom and babies had wandered into a woman's back yard and the cat appeared. I must have just missed it. The woman said the Mom and babies scattered all different directions when the cat came up. I just happened on the unlucky one the cat set it's sites on. He's supposed to call me if he finds Mom. He really wasn't too sure what to do. The usually deal with dogs. It was several blocks from the city park with the duck pond. I just filled the bathtub again and baby is going back in there. Why me?

The total on the car was $965.20 with the labor. The key/ignition/whatever chip was $500+ and the labor was $350+.

With a cat in the area I would not put the baby duck out. I had some lost ducklings in my back yard and so I put them in a wire cage. Eventually the mother came around for them and when I heard her quacking on the other side of the privacy fence I let the babies out to go to her. The only problem, a cat in the neighborhood, the mother could not get them to water fast enough and a couple days later they were no longer. Not that I could have kept a batch of baby mallards but it was upsetting to reunite them for that to happen.

Tractor Supply is where I get my feed. Just make sure you get the plain and not the medicated. Apparently, a lot of chickens eat the medicated feed for some reason. You put a little in the palm of your hand and hold his bill down into the feed and he should eat some. Generally, they will figure it out after a couple of lessons. Make sure you get the crumbles as ducks don't like the pellets as much as the crumbles.:)

Ok, I made a trip up to the pond and sat there for about 45 minutes. None of the other ducks would come near it. So....it's back in my tub with Hugo guarding it. He hates those ducks at the pond but he is just fascinated by the baby. He's laying on the bath mat by the tub. Go figure.

I called Tractor Supply. They are going to have it waiting at the counter for me. I'm headed to the lake for a couple of hours. The poor dogs have been stuck with the city park for the last few days while my car was in the shop. They want to go swimming.

I think the duck is making the trip into Austin to the Wildlife Rescue tomorrow unless Mom shows up in the morning at the pond. It's big enough to get out of the tub which it did a while ago and was wandering around my house. It pooped on the floor of course. I put it back in the tub and let some of the water out, but there wasn't much in there. Now there is just enough for it to float if it pulls it legs up.
