from: Fuji manager admits that they may go Full Frame! | Fuji Rumors

Amateur Photographer interviewed Mr. Hiroshi Kawahara from Fuji. And he confirmed that “Fujifilm technicians are seriously investigating the possible launch of a full-frame compact system camera (CSC) and are focusing on the sensor and processor that would be required.” Mr Kawahara also confirmed that “the covering circle of Fuji’s current X-series lenses is large enough to accommodate full frame.” The problem is that current wide angle lenses would not cover the full FF area.

From the article it seems that Fujifilm is a long way away from even designing let alone producing a full frame CSC product.

Oh, and the designer likes Sony's RX1.

I would be really surprised if about 3 years from now there isn't a FF version of the X Pro and X100. The lenses won't be a problem. They are releasing something like 8 or 10 lenses for the X Pro in 2 years. They already make MF film cameras and lenses. I don't think it will be next year or the year after though.

Whether they go there or not would depend on the market place acceptance of such cameras (and their prices) and whether Fujifilm felt they were a competitive threat.

At this point all we know is they've basically not spent any time thinking about this, no more than we may have.

Well, at least that is what they want us to think. I doubt very much if a company with their heritage has not considered all possibilities. Of course there is some distance from consideration to action.

Given the apparent price drop in FF sensors I fell it's a distinct and welcome possibility over the next few years.

:D Probably wishful thinking on my part, but they could count me in immediately if they released a FF version of the X Pro. If Fuji is listening I only need 28, 50, and 85. And I would be willing to live with F1.8.

Seriously though, I would be really surprised if they don't do this in about 3 years. A Full Frame X Trans Sensor would be incredible.

On the other hand, I promised myself I was stopping with the X Pro once I got the 23, 27, and 56mm lenses. I'm really going to hold myself to that. I'm almost ready to part with my D700 and various lenses. I'm sure once they release those three I'll sell it. I probably won't get anything for the D700 but I have some very good G Series Primes and Zooms, so hopefully it won't be too painful.

I'd agree that the Nikon glass will likely gain you a reasonable price.

I'm down to just the X-Pro 1; my GF1 went to my wife, and my FF Canon stuff (inluding some great glass) went about a year ago. I would go for a FF Fuji too.

I was very happy with my Fuji before the update; now I am delighted with it. I spent yesterday wandering the city with it (35 and 18 lenses) and the new firmware has transformed the camera. Playing with it around the house I knew the difference was solid, but in a day of real-world shooting it was a wonderful photographic tool.

I've appreciated the advances in EVFs and don't mind using them at all, but I would be crushed if Fuji gave up on the hybrid. With the update it is fast, way more accurate and it is a delight to use.

So yeah, bring on the FF.

Though for now, I have no issues with the IQ. I'm making very large, beautifully detailed prints from hand held shots. Gorgeous.

Now all I need is some photographic talent and I'm set.

Pelao-

I could not be happier with the Fuji. I came really close to selling the Nikon earlier this year and actually had a buyer. I changed my mind and actually wish I hadn't now. I'm going to just wait and see what happens when Fuji releases the new lenses. Right now I'm broke because of the vet bills I've accumulated this year. I honestly haven't used the D700 in months. I have the big 2.8 zooms, ect. The two lenses I really love is the 35mm F1.4 and 85mm F1.4. But...I never get them out. The Fuji is just the perfect camera for me. Same thing- I'm just amazed at the prints I'm getting at 12 x 18 and I'm using an old Canon Pixma Pro printer.

One other thing. I'm spending a whole lot less time in front of the computer before I print. The Fuji just delivers right out of the camera. I also am in 100% agreement on the firmware upgrade.

Well, at least that is what they want us to think.

More likely, that is what you think they want "us" to think.

Myself, I take what the Fujifilm representative interviewed said at face value -- they are only just now looking into it.

Why?

Because Sony surprised them, forcing them to at least do a high level analysis on whether their current CPU and sensor tech, or that easily within their reach, could compete if called upon to do so.

That to me is a far more logical explanation than asserting without evidence that the Fujifilm rep was carefully disguising their real plan of action. Not every corporate maneuver is steeped in skulduggery.

With the forgoing in mind, it's easy to imagine there's no full frame X camera coming from Fujifilm in the next 12 months, since they haven't started, and they don't even yet know if they want to. Sony doesn't even know if the RX1 will be successful enough to follow on.

I am prepared to give Fuji a bit more credit. They don't seem fearful of innovation. While we are busy imagining things, it seems reasonable to assume that they have looked at FF before now. Choosing not to go that way for the larger X series made sense; it would have moved the price up, especially since they want to develop their own sensors and not rely on other suppliers.

For me, the real question is not whether they have looked at FF. It's more a question of whether or not it is a paper project, to be considered in more detail of the X-mount is successful, or has a team dedicated to development.

We simply don't know, but it's fun to speculate. I'd agree though that it seems unlikely in the next 12 months.

Anyway, if it comes to pass I'll certainly consider it.

I doubt making lenses would be a problem for them. The X series will have the following lenses within 2 years of introduction 10-24, 14-55, 55-200, 14, 18, 27, 35, 56, 60. They have also released 5 X series cameras in about 2 years. Fuji makes the lenses, the sensors, and the bodies so they can basically make whatever they want to. I'm sure if they want to do FF they can. They still make a MF film camera.

On the Sony, I think they will sell a lot of those. I would buy one if I could afford it. I just can't afford $3400 for a fixed lens camera + viewfinder. That camera looks like it has a great lens on it!!

I am prepared to give Fuji a bit more credit.

Why? Their representatives have said we are only now looking into it. The X line is solidly APS-C based, and they have been marketing their sensor tech as being as good as full frame.

Certainly I can understand wanting to give them credit for being imaginative camera designers, but when they say they aren't doing something, I see no reason to believe otherwise given the circumstances.

At any rate, what they are or are not doing hardly matters. When they announce something, then we should care.
