Fuji ThumbsUp

Sue, if its for the X100, I'd get this Lensmate thing instead of a Thumbs up - I had one on mine and its a great product:

Lensmate Fujifilm X100 Thumbrest+ | Lensmate

I guess its price has gone up - I recall getting mine for maybe $45-50 and now they're $60. Still a good bit less and it's designed with more than just the thumb-rest function in mind...

Hi Sue,

I had the same reaction, but saved up and got one for my X-Pro 1. I didn't want a knock-off, being concerned that any reduction in design or manufacture tolerances might actually end up scratching or damaging my camera. Anyway, I'm glad I got it.

Looks well designed and made.

Sue, the problem with understanding what gnarly means is that it has different meanings. To a surfer in California who is perpetually stoned, some gnarly waves are perfect for surfing. That gnarly thumb grip that Boid linked to looks a bit "knock-offish"

And to answer for your question to Ray, the "more than" a thumb rest means it also protects you from bumping the exposure compensation dial.....which we all have likely done before. That's the one I'd get if I were getting one myself. I think it looks sharp and have heard nothing but good things about it.

Thanks, Luke... The exposure dial bump is something I do with regular monotony, so I see how this one is worth getting. I dont mind paying $60 for a decent one, but shipping is often a killer for me. In this case, however, its absolutely reasonable, so I think I'll be ordering it after I've paid the gas bill and taken Tom for his next antibiotic shot :) (Unless I sell my K-5 and lenses this week, in which case it will happen a lot sooner)

Yeah, what Luke said. Not only the exposure comp dial but also the shutter speed dial. Just a very nice, highly camera-specific design.

And "gnarly" means sort of the same thing as BAD, which, as we all know, actually means GOOD, except when it doesn't...

Sue:

I've purchased two of these now for my X100 and X-Pro 1. I've had no issues, and they really improve the handling of both cameras.

Be very very very VERY careful about how firmly you tighten those allen bolts in the top of those ebay knockoffs. Don't ask me how I know, but I know... I have one of the Thumbs Up models on my X-Pro that they originally intended for one of the Leica models, maybe the X-1. It has a cold shoe above it's bolt and the bolt basically just makes the thing grip harder against the edges of the hotshoe, so there's no risk from over-tightening. The bolt in those ebay deals presses straight DOWN into the hot-shoe and over-tightening can have fairly dire consequences. So, again, if you're gonna go the budget route, be wickedly careful!

Thanks for the warning, Ray. Is the issue damage to the hot shoe? I've used the pads that come with these versions.

Yeah, the pad just keeps the hot shoe from getting scuffed, but its putting pressure directly down into the hotshoe, braced agains the slots of the shoe - the're not really part of the same assembly and it putting pressure on the bottom from something braced agains the sides is just asking for the whole thing to come apart. In a sense the pad makes it worse because it just gives you a false sense of security to tighten farther and that's not the direction you should err in...

Also the thumbs up specific models are longer, I used to have the shorter one on my X100, I prefer the new longer one

That was something which appealed, although when i look at photographs, it looks like the silver one is much shorter than the black thats intended for the Pro. I do like the Lensmate one, though, which Ray pointed at, with the additional protection against clumsy fingers (mine!) which keep bumping dials, unbidden.
