Panasonic D-LUX 4 (LX3) - Can't figure out Auto Focus Area

Hi. I've been wanting to try the LX series for a while and just picked up a D-LUX 4. I know this camera is old but I hope someone here can help.

I'm having trouble with Auto Focus. I've tried both Spot and 1-Area but neither are doing what I would expect them to do.

I'm in a dimly lit room, trying to focus on specific items on my desk. On 99 out of 100 attempts, I do not get the small rectangle (1-area) or the small dot (spot). The camera seems to not be able to determine what I'm pointing at and I end up with a large green square that is setting focus on basically the entire frame.

I'd like to focus on one object (a pair of scissors) but the camera is instead focusing on the entire scene. Only one time have I been able to get the spot focus to work, where I saw the spot AF marker turn green.

Any tips or advice? Is there not enough contrast in my scene maybe? Not enough light?

Welcome.

Having had a D-Lux 4 I suspect the answer is in the third line of your post - "I'm in a dimly lit room..." (reminds me of Zork ;) ) the by-now quite elderly AF on the D-Lux simply won't cope. Up the light levels and you should be fine.
