Sony RX100 iii - build quality and belt pouch questions

wt21

Hall of Famer
I just received an RX100 iii from Amazon warehouse in used condition. Looking to replace my RX100 first version.

Two questions:

1) the buttons and dials on this RX100 iii feel a lot looser and less solid than on my version 1. If this is the way it is, so be it, but as I bought it used from Amazon, I want to make sure it's not something that got abused (this was not pristine -- there was even a thumb print on the front lens)

2) The mkiii just barely is too big for my old mk1 belt pouch (a neoprene one with magnetic catch). Does anyone have a nice, compact belt pouch you found works on the iii? Especially one that DOESN'T use a zipper?

I was thinking about the RX100 iii. What are your impressions?

Just got back from SFO with the iii. Not missing a beat from the mark i. IQ is the same (I actually think it's slightly sharper - DR and ISO seems the same). Liked the wider angle at 24mm. Not missing the 70-100mm distance so much, but that's mostly because I also packed the a6000 w/55-210.

The pop-up EVF is very handy. Only used occasionally, but was of great help when needed. Flip up tilty LCD is a big help, too. Also does selfies, which though it seems gimmicky, is really useful on family vacations. It even gives you a 3-2-1 countdown timer. It's well implemented.

If considering moving from a mark i to a iii -- the EVF and LCD and extra wide angle are the big plusses to me (there are also video things, but I don't do video much).

If you don't have an RX100 and are just considering whether you should get one -- it's my favorite all-time camera to date for being handy, portable and awesome IQ. It is never the camera I want to pick up to enjoy shooting. It is always the camera I pick up when I either need ultra portable, or if I need multiples bodies (I even use it in my event shooting -- a7 w/70-200, a6000 w/28 2.0 and RX100 for fast wide angle/group shots).

The ONLY thing that could ever supplant an RX100 from my lineup would be the fabled (rumored?) Nikon DL 18-50, if it ever actually releases.

The only downside to the RX100 iii is I still haven't found a working belt pouch.

Thanks for the reply.I ordered an open box RX100 iii (with warranty!) from B&H on Friday. My wife has an original RX100 and I've been impressed with the IQ. More to the point, it actually fits in a pocket. I shot quite a bit in Philly during a recent trip with an EPL7 and 12-32. Really small but even a pancake lens makes pocketing difficult. I'm hopeful.

If you are concerned about dr shoot raw and you can recover fairly well. Still has its limits, but for mostly casual use, the rx100 nails it 90% or more of the time

It is a slippery little thing though. I buy little self sticky rubber dots and put them on the front. Makes it much easier to hold. I'll try to post a photo when I can of my solution. Others buy a grip, but I find the rubber dots work well without adding volume or mass.

But if you've shot the rx100, you probably know all this anyway :)

This is what I use for grip.

If I'm out to do photography, my Mu43 cameras are the preferred choice. Not pocketable but easy to carry in the hand. The RX100 iii is for when I want take shots while primarily doing something else, e.g., a day at a theme park. I'll go with a wrist strap although those dots seem like a good plan. Unless, of course, I want to skin it with lizard leather.

Belt case follow-up:

I tried a number of cases, and ended up getting this one: Amazon.com : MegaGear Protective Leather Black Camera Case, For Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 V, DSC-RX100 IV, DSC-RX100 III, DSC-RX100 II : Camera & Photo

On Amazon, the most popular reviews say you need to cut out for the front lens. But the more recent reviews says an RX100 iii and iv fit without modification. The one I received fits perfectly without modification, so they must have changed the build. Also, it might not be obvious in the picture, but it has a magnetic clasp at the bottom, and not a physical snap, which I really appreciate.
