Is anyone using Affinity Photo? At the moment it's only available for Mac but there is supposedly a Windows Beta arriving later this year. I'm curious if anyone is using it and, if so, what they think of it.

I was in the Beta test group, and to be honest, I just could not adapt to their different way of doing things. I'd highly recommend taking a trial and seeing how you go.

Pixelmator and Acorn continue to improve, and Macphun is brinking on releasing a full editor (Luminar) as well (and thats one I'd look out for!)

[edit] Oh.. wait... you're a windows user? Forget everything I said except about taking a trial.

Thanks. Too old to start with a new OS. I'll definitely have a look at Affinity when the Windows version appears, though from some of the reviews I read it seems the DAM side is pretty weak.

yeah, slim pickings when it comes to serious Photoshop alternatives on Windows...
Hopefully that will change some day... On the video-editing side the Macs are slowly phasing out due to the Mac Pro workstations going the way they're going... But I guess for still image editing the Mac Laptops are fine... So maybe things will stay this way for longer...
I'm also looking forward to Affinity on Windows. I'm in no rush to replace my current CS5, but one day I might not be able to run that on a new Windows release and then I'd like to have a 'much' cheaper alternative to Adobe...

Well there are two great LR alternatives on Windows - Capture One and DXO Optics Pro. Unfortunately both have limitations when it comes to X-Trans files. Those limitations are more than offset by Capture One's other features, but it happens to be a lot more expensive than the Adobe options and part of the attraction of Affinity is that it's cheap:)

On1 is releasing a RAW version of their Photo software in about 4 weeks - I've prepaid for my copy.

I think their constant refrain about the 'painful import process' is quite funny. I'm not sure why they find it painful, unless they're doing something wrong. The DAM aspect of LR is one of the reasons I prefer it.

I didn't see anything about how it works with Fuji files so that would be a factor
for me.

I look forward to reading your impressions.

There's a site called AlternativeTo.net It's a great resource for finding options for a lot of applications and has the OS and licensing filter options.

My son it taking a photo class and needed something to edit RAW files so I looked recently. RAWTherapee, ACDSee, and Zoner Photo Studio seemed like the simplest options while still having the functions he needed. Ended up using RAWTherapee since it was free. I didn't look through all the options, you might find one there that will handle Fuji files. As much as I LOVED my Fuji S5 Pro when I had it the issue of file support was always there and one of those things in the back of my head when I look at anything X-Trans.

Affinity is an alternative to Photoshop.

Photoshop is NOT an alternative to Lightroom.

So, why should Affinity be an alternative to Lightroom? Why even discuss it?

Because I asked a question and started a conversation perhaps? And because people on this forum tend to try to be polite and helpful perhaps?
