News Ban on cameras in cabin baggage - back to film?

Or, I could just stay off airplanes. But, that's a strange thought from some one that holds an pilots license. Although the medical certificate hasn't been renewed for several years. The wife and I are traveling to the lower 48 from Alaska later this Summer. We decided to drive rather than the hassle and perhaps danger involved in commercial flight, these days. And, my heart no longer tolerates the altitude of flight very well.
Many years ago my son and I delivered an airplane to AK, and another back down, via Canada. Great trip. We have driven through many times.

What's interesting is that if you charter a private flight at a general aviation airport, not much of this security applies. I wonder if there is an opportunity for an 'air-uber' to collate folks willing to pitch-in to charter a private flight, and so avoid the ridiculousness and indignities of public airports.

But Bill... I see a business opportunity! Flight insurance for digital cameras and other electronic gear. Creative destruction, Bill, creative destruction... :)
OMG, I just thought of what could happen to my laptop in the hands of the baggage handlers I see throwing bags on the conveyer in to the plane.
Now backing everything up on the cloud is imperative... Until the EMP wipes it all.

Dixons might expand their camera stores at airports for rental customers instead of purchasers. Might be a fantastic cure for GAS!

At first I read, 'no electronic device larger than a mobile phone', and thought that we would all be safe, hahaha. But banning cameras specifically, regardless of how small they are? Preposterous.

My next thought was that this would be the perfect excuse to get the Leica M-A all manual camera. No meter or anything, just pure mechanical bliss.

Don't want to speculate about the reasons or any future measures, just provide additional information: been travelling through and within Germany this week and been asked on the security checks to take any cameras (I only had 3 :) and even so they were a bit surprised) out of the bags and place them on a separate tray for the X-Ray machine. No additional checks.

Edit: one was a film camera, but with electronics.
