For any who have been richly annoyed by the Windows 10 photo import function . . .

I found the answer to the photo import problem here: Windows 10 photo import settings

Scroll down to the Scott Sampson reply. He has a little 3-line patch file to run.

I created a restore point and then tried it, and it really works, popping up the Windows "Import photos and videos (windows)" option.

The reason I like that particular option so much is as follows:

1. It creates a new folder in the "Pictures" section of windows and assigns the current date to it.
2. You have the option of adding an additional name to the folder. The convention that I use is (name of camera) (name of place) (name of subject), so that the folder name becomes 2017-04-25 OMD Frear Park Sunset
3. It imports all the photos off the SD card and assigns the name (OMD Frear Park Sunset in this case) and a sequential number to them.
4. Optionally, it will delete all the photos off the SD card.

It's fast (basically one step), easy, and allows a number of search options in Windows independent of whatever photo editor I decide to use.

Cheers, Jock

I have a multitude of 'Photo' software but still prefer Faststone Image Viewer which is free.

www.faststone.org

It does a surprising amount of image processing as well as management.

I've tried Fastone, and I liked it. I've tried a bunch of different photo processing packages, and none of them had the import function that I described above. Once the photos are imported and properly labeled, then I can use whatever processing package I choose.
