Sony RX100 Mark III Officially Announced

It looks to be a great camera, but as a former LX3 owner I know the tradeoff at the long end won't make up for the 24mm equivalent short end. The EVF looks like they've really gotten that concept right, though real world tests will be interesting. Still kinda wish I could pick a little...

    Sony RX100 II or GM1

The GM1 is a better and more flexible camera than the RX100s, but it fails in one key test of a compact camera. This test may or may not be relevant for you (in the general sense, not addressing the OP). The test is: can I put it in my shirt pocket with a zoom lens on it? The GM1 will not...

    Sony Sony RX100 m2 question

I've owned both the RX100 and the M2. I can tell you there is no difference in raw files, and IMHO jpg shooters should be prepared to tweak settings to get their desired output. I found the very slightly increased dimensions and weight of the M2 made no difference to shirt pocket carry. I use...

Micro 4/3 Panasonic Lumix GM1 Anybody?

Completely agree. To me - and I have no desire to even look at, much less buy, the G-M1 - the great significance is that we have a system that stretches from the G-M1 to the GH3 and EM-1. Combine that with the range of lenses available and...it's totally compelling!

Micro 4/3 OM-D/7-14 at the Guggenheim Bilbao

The most I have seen with mine on the EM5 is some occasional nasty CA fringing.

Micro 4/3 OM-D/7-14 at the Guggenheim Bilbao

I have been taking pictures since Nixon's first term... ...I can make nearly any lens flare in various, unpredictable and unattractive ways - as I know you can. The thread may be old, but the photos are great!

Micro 4/3 OM-D/7-14 at the Guggenheim Bilbao

Isn't there a major problem with these photos? Sure, they are beautifully composed and exposed. But today "everyone" on the internet "knows" that the 7-14/4 lens has a disastrous flaw, especially on Olympus bodies - "every" exposure has horrible purple blobs. </humor> These are...

    Sony Sony RX100 v Panasonic GX1 with 12-42 PZ

Don, as you know so well, there are trade-offs and compromises. I love 24mm FOVE...but it does me little good if the camera isn't with me! I'd love an a la carte design where I could pick the best features from many cameras...but it wouldn't be possible. - John

    Sony Sony RX100 v Panasonic GX1 with 12-42 PZ

In some cases. Fortunately, your post doesn't apply to the RX100.

    Sony Sony RX100 Successor

You are probably two years away from a significant sensor improvement. There are a lot of pictures worth taking between now and then...I would buy either the RX100 (if you really don't want the added features, the most useful of which to me is the tilt screen - I use it constantly) or the Mk2...

    Sony Sony RX100 v Panasonic GX1 with 12-42 PZ

Or, if the smaller size of the RX100 isn't compelling, and it is noticeably smaller than the LX series, I owned an LX7 for a while and have to say that it really was noticeably better in every way than my LX5.

    Micro 4/3 EM1 - first impressions

Interesting reading. I'm not seeing anything that makes me want to trade or sell my 12-35/2.8, but if I were buying today it would be a hard decision. The OIS and the smaller size of the Panasonic are attractive pluses. All I can say is I'm very glad we have such excellent choices!!!

    Sony Sony RX100 v Panasonic GX1 with 12-42 PZ

I like the flexibility of the zoom, but if I were less committed to that, the GR or the Coolpix A would be in my pocket.

    Sony Sony RX100 v Panasonic GX1 with 12-42 PZ

I've owned/own both and without having tried to make a real study of the comparison I'd say the RX100 is a lot closer to the GX1 than you'd think, and it fits in a shirt pocket. On the other hand, the RX100, which I should mention fits in a shirt pocket, is somewhat lens-limited. The GX1...

    Micro 4/3 Smallest m43: Panasonic GM1+12-32 f/3.5-5.6 for 699 Euro

Meh. It's in the same no man's land the LX7 occupies, even though it has a bigger sensor. My view - too small for a general use camera, way too big with its kit lens for a shirt pocket. Neither fish nor fowl... :frown:

Fuji X-A1 superior image quality to X-M1 (and X-E1 and X-PRO1)?

    And as an oh-by-the-way thought...when can I expect an XA100S ??? ;)
  18. J

Fuji X-A1 superior image quality to X-M1 (and X-E1 and X-PRO1)?

But the question remains: if IQ is so similar, other than because you're already shooting X-Trans Fuji cameras, why not choose the conventional Bayer sensor, since it's a little less expensive and (more importantly) is probably better supported by most PP software packages?
  19. J

Fuji X-A1 Image Quality better than X-M1 (and X-E1 and X-PRO1)?

Rico, I read your post earlier today. Unless I'm missing something, for raw shooters, it sounds like there really isn't much to choose between the two - did I misread your article?

    Micro 4/3 G5 or GX7?

The G5 is very good. Looking at the latest cameras - EP-5, GX7, EM-1 - they show very little improvement in sensor performance. It's more a question of what features you want, how the camera will handle for YOU, and how the cost figures into that equation. I keep looking at the newer cameras -...

Sony Can I survive without a viewfinder?

There are definitely advantages to an eye level viewfinder - for example, greater camera stability compared to holding the camera in your hands in free space. I used EVFs with my (former) LX-3, LX-5 and LX-7. None of those was really a shirt pocket camera in the first place so the gawky EVFs...

    Micro 4/3 G5 or GX7?

I have a G5 and in spite of the fact that it's not a very sexy camera, it delivers great IQ with great ergos. And, as pointed out above, it is currently a great value.

    Micro 4/3 Ming Thein's review of Olympus OM-D E-M1

Good points from MT. The reality is that most of us don't nail exposures exactly enough - can't, under the circumstances most of us are shooting under - to have half a stop or even a full stop be meaningful on any consistent basis. I really think we are at the point where sensor changes are...

    Micro 4/3 Ming Thein's review of Olympus OM-D E-M1

I would have said more or less equivalent, but considering that's pixel-peeping, call it the same. That left me thinking (with relief) that the real improvement with the EM-1 was the UI - which, when you think about it, is not shocking. I think that we have come to the point where IQ...

Micro 4/3 I think the time has come to let go

Nihil novum sub sole. "Full frame" was for a long time an amateur format in film days. People who were "serious" shot 2 1/4 or larger...and people got all torqued up and defensive about their format. Just bring me the photos...

Micro 4/3 I think the time has come to let go

There's a lot of truth there...and I have never understood the m4/3 angst. Two competing manufacturers with different emphases in body design and different lens lines should be, and in my view is, a huge strength, not a cause for anxiety.

Looking for a new camera system

Just to throw something else into the mix, the Fuji raw files are, how do I say this politely?, subject to a lot more inconsistency in terms of how the various raw developers handle them. That's not an issue with m4/3 raw files. Another factor is lens availability. The m4/3 lens range...

    Fuji Brothers

Yes. That picture actually reminds me of how was feeling for the last month or so before our younger son was born...the first one had had 2 years and almost 9 months of being the center of the universe, and then... I am happy to say that 20-odd years later they are still best friends. :)...

Micro 4/3 Pro level Ol - Video leaked: NEW OM-DM-E1

Apparently the video got yanked...it looks like there will be two new OM-D cameras, one a successor to the EM-5 and this one, which will be bigger. I like that plan - I prefer the EM-5 body size to this one, but others are going to feel differently.

Fuji Fuji X100 diopter sadness :(

Really - bummer. I had actually checked that and was concerned before I bought it. I usually need to crank up the diopter adjustment on my cameras to +3 in order to be able to use the viewfinder without my glasses. For whatever reason, at +1 (the max possible with the X100S) the finder...

If you are shooting raw, the cards will fill up pretty quickly - I am nervous about big cards as a matter of temperament but I'd use at least 16GB for raw and I'm actually using 32GB. I did some continuous shooting comparisons with 95mbps read/write and 45mbps read/write SanDisk cards and...

I am always interested to read these as a way of doing a check on where I am and where I might be headed. For me, for now, m4/3 has become my prime (pardon the pun?) tool. The Nikon DSLRs got too heavy and suffered a massive inventory reduction. Totally against all expectations, the RX100...

Sony Need help deciding..RX100 or new release??

For me, after a lot of thought, it came down to the tilt screen and nothing else. I decided I was OK on the cost of the change (which was about $200; $100 "loss" on the sale of the RX100 and $100 extra MSRP for the RX100 Mk2). I rationalized that as either the cost of the 400 or so pics...
