That's a fine shot of a cat with real personality. My experience has been that, with great patience, the most recalcitrant of cats can nonetheless be brought round to the ways of love and cuddles.

Natural FOV -- "custom 39.5mm lens"

The theory makes no sense. We have peripheral vision and our "natural " FOV is a lot wider than 40mm. A second way to objectively judge "normal" is from the diagonal of the sensor. This results in 43mm being the normal for 35mm full frame, which is why Pentax created a 43mm lens. An...

I love canals myself. Seems like a nice area. One comment on the shots... they seem tilted towards the black. Something in the development?

I need serious help choosing a camera...

The external EVF is the best in class and gives you 90 degree tilt. I love that. Not sure why the menus are a nightmare. Very easy to use, IMO. And you have your choice of three (!) different ways of accessing controls. Something for everyone, I would have thought.

    Micro 4/3 ISO comparison: E-P5 versus E-PL2

Just had a real test of the E-P5, shooting a play from the audience using the Olympus 45mm. I shot at ISO 1600 so I had a good chance of freezing motion. Used only a tad of Lightroom's own built-in noise reduction, no sharpening, and a bit of S-curve contrast. Results were very impressive. The...

    Micro 4/3 ISO comparison: E-P5 versus E-PL2

OK, so it's been done before, but with both cameras in my hands I have done a comparison of the ISO performance. I was more than pleasantly happy with the results. It's just been posted over at the Theatre of Noise... an appropriately named blog as always!

Fuji Fuji XT-1 - new top dog Fuji X or over-festooned retro?

I too find the FA Limiteds to be extra special. But Micro Four Thirds has great lenses to rival them. Certainly the 14/2.5, 20/1.7, 45/1.8, and 75/1.8 equal or exceed the DA Limiteds. As a bonus the system is much lighter and more compact. Pentax have never made a digital body the equal of...

Canon Canon G1 X Mark II Announced and Looks Amazing

I am not into zooms, not into fixed lenses, and certainly not into the archaic lumbering beast called Canon. But this is almost an interesting camera. They just need to make the aperture restrictions work the other way. At 24mm I'd be content with f/4, so long as I had f/2 at 120 mm.

    Micro 4/3 A few from the new Olympus M. Zuiko 25mm F1.8

You haven't been reading that closely then. Over the course of his many articles he has said many things that have made me doubt him. Or at least many things that place him firmly in the "cheerleader" camp of reviewers. Such readers tend to be the most popular and have the largest following...

Pentax Pentax K-01 Joins the Mirrorless System Camera Fray

The K-01 will have very good IQ and might appeal as a second camera for Pentax shooters, once it falls in price by half, which it will. Because it appears to be deficient in most other ways compared with other mirrorless cameras on the market. Yellow bricks have never been that popular with cool...

    Micro 4/3 Comparison of new Oly 45mm f1.8 with OM 50 1.4

Olympus Announces Three New Pen Cameras and Two New Lenses

I agree completely, Bill. An add-on EVF takes up valuable space, costs too much, and uses up the slot I want to put my radio trigger into. A built-in flash is useless since it is weak and cannot tilt or rotate. Worse yet, it uses up valuable real-estate on the left-hand side of the camera, where...

    Cameras not gadgets.

I agree. My wish list had nothing to do with image quality for a good reason... people in general make too big a deal over the newest sensor and incremental improvements to ISO 6400 noise reduction etc. etc. Usability and dependability of the camera are far more important. I could list quite a...

    Cameras not gadgets.

It is dead easy for current mirrorless systems to be 100% better. All the components are out there, spread between Sony, Ricoh, Fuji etc. Here's one recipe. I start with a PEN since it has IBIS, a solid metal build and a nice non-DSLR styling. Olympus E-P1 + built-in EVF + tilt screen + second...

    Cameras not gadgets.

The K-5 is definitely the camera to beat. Lately I have been using an Olympus PEN but it does seem far too much like a gadget in comparison. What is the difference? I suppose a gadget has features for the sake of it or simply to look cool. A gadget requires one to menu dive. A purpose-built...

Where is Micro Four Thirds headed?

I agree. MFT has only a couple of advantages over a system like the Pentax K-5. Unfortunately price isn't one of them, because by the time you buy an add-on EVF, as required by most models, you are in the same ball-park. The main reason DSLR users compromise on IQ, performance, features and...

Olympus Announces Three New Pen Cameras and Two New Lenses

Makes no sense to me. Olympus very badly needs a flagship product but instead they flood the market with as many variations on the same camera as possible. Where is the body with built-in EVF, tilt screen and two proper control wheels? You still can't assign ISO to a control wheel. The manual...

    Mini Review: onOne Perfect Layers

Layers are terribly important to any decent use of retouching. For example, you can't even so something simple like local dodge and burn without layers. So this plugin meets a real need, but I agree the price is ridiculous! The Nik plugins incorporate a certain sort of smart masking but do not...

Ricoh Review: Ricoh GXR Camera with 28 and 50mm Lens-Sensor Modules

Nice review Mis, very well done. Count me as one of those utterly bemused by the strategy of combining sensor with lens and then charging over the moon for the privilege. This camera is drop dead ugly and seems to be a solution looking for a problem. However I love the snap focus idea. And the...
