Sony huge price jump on RX1R II

It's no mystery. It's simply currency adjustments. The Yen is up against the Dollar 20% in the last year. Correspondingly, the price is up 20% in the last year. Similarly, the Yen is also up against the Euro. I guess it took 2 mins for this explanation to sink in from when we discussed it...

Samsung True. Samsung NX Camera's are finished.

Sony has been in imaging for decades, even before they bought out Minolta. They were the market leader in broadcast video. They literally set the standards for that industry from umatic to beta. Which mounts has Sony dropped? The only two consumer mounts I know about are A Mount and E Mount...

    Sony Sony RX100 IV announced.

Drives are cheap. :) I've been there for years already. I shoot 3 brackets RAW. So every time I snap a shot, I think of it as 100MB. I can easily hit the shutter 10 times a minute. I do think continuous photography is the future. There have probably been discussions like this every time...

    Sony Sony RX100 IV announced.

Sony does a variety of things with stacked sensors. Everything from increased sensitivity, to PDAF support to full RGB processing like Foveon. In this case, I think it only increased sensitivity. I think of it as BSI 2. Video is very important to me. So 4K is big. But even if you don't do...

    Canon Dynamic range of G1X

You are absolutely right. I did think you guys were talking about the Panasonic GX1. That clears something up for me. There was talk about the 2nd edition of the camera. I didn't think there was a 2nd rev of the GX1 and googled but couldn't find anything. That's because I was thinking of...

    Canon Dynamic range of G1X

I was recently in Japan and considered buying a used GX1 there. They are going for about $75 for the body. It's Japanese used otherwise known as mint in the rest of the world. The same $75 will get you a G5. GF2s are still strangely selling for $200 but GF5s are under $50.

    RX100 value

In that case, the last thing Amazon.de shipped me cost $15 for shipping. Considering the cost of the item, I think that was cheaper than it would have cost to ship it from San Francisco to New York with the same declared value. I remember when shipping internationally was really expensive. No...

    Sigma SD1 = $1999 USD

The SD1 Merrill is $755 new from Amazon. I always wanted a merrill. Either the SD1 or one of the DPs. I've been struggling about buying one for weeks at these blowout prices. In the end, I think I'll wait for Sony. Sony has full RGB sensors in the works so it's only a matter of time. The...

Sigma On the fence for a DP2M/DP3M.

I've always wanted a foveon camera. Now that the DP2M/DP3M are in the mid $300(USD) range, I'm seriously thinking of getting one. The DP1M is still more pricey. I've had my finger over the "buy" button for a few days now. But I've noticed a couple of people selling their DP2M/DP3M off in the...

Yes, directly from the Sony store. They also sold the RX100M2 for $279. I've tried getting that a few times but always lose out. There aren't that many when they stock up. The competition is tough. On another note, Sofmap in Japan was selling the original RX100 for 23,800 yen as a holiday...

    RX1 for $1400.

It's not a matter of planned obsolescence, unless it's an Apple product. It's a matter of technology advancing. I disagree that "a 24mp sensor coupled to epic zeiss glass will not become obsolete". It will most definitely become obsolete. As I said, that A7 I was talking about was a A7 kit...

Since cameras became technology. Now they are on the same cycle as technology. The days of film where keeping a camera for decades are gone. Film cameras didn't really change that much. You put in a new sensor every time you changed rolls. Digital does. For example, since the RX1 the A7...

Cowboom, also known as Best Buy, is selling the RX1 for half off, $1400. I think it's a part of their 50% off Sony that started last month. Micro 4/3 G7X - does the larger sensor make up for some lens reach via cropping?

The G7X already does crop it's sensor to get it's rated focal lengths. Some people have gone to the trouble to figure out how much and at some focal lengths it can be as high as 31%. So the G7X can only be using 69% of it's 20MP sensor and cropping. Take that into account if you are planning...

Canon S100 refurbished for $85. Today only.

It's old but for $85, still a good deal. I was tempted, but the reality is that I would never use it since I have a RX100. You must have a discover card to get it down to $85, otherwise it's $110. Canon is selling the refurbished S100 for $120. Today only, they automatically give you another...

    Sony RX100 III or G7X?

I think Canon did try to differentiate itself with the lens. But there are compromises. It's not just that it doesn't cover the sensor, it's also that the distortion at the edges seems to be more than the RX100. Cropping the sensor to extend focal length is something Canon has done before...

    Sony RX100 III or G7X?

I would go check the PowerShot forum at dpreview. There are a lot of threads talking about the G7X right now, many comparing it to the RX100. One that stands out for me is the one that shows that the lens on the G7X doesn't cover the entire sensor. So the G7X crops the center 18MP and then...

Played with the Lytro Illum today

I think it will be niche for a good long while. The problem is that it trades resolution for that ability. Color also trades resolution for color but it's only 2-3x versus 10x for the Lytros. Would people rather have a 40MP image or a 4MP? How many people actually want to adjust the focus...

Sony Sony Canada jumped the gun, they already have the RX100M3 on their website.

DPR has put up it's studio shots. I didn't think it would be, but the RX100M3 has decidedly better IQ than the original RX100. It's all about the lens. In the center, it's not all that different. As you move off center, it becomes more obvious. It's been an evolution. The RX10 is better...
