    Olympus Olympus Stylus 1

I attended the Elton John farewell tour last night at the London O2 Arena. It's a large space with a 20,000 capacity and I unfortunately was seated quite near the back. This gives an idea of my seating position. For an "old" compact, the combination of a 1/1.7" sensor with a 28-300mm f2.8...

    Olympus Olympus Stylus 1

These two are with the Stylus 1 but I've also been experimenting with a Lumix LF1 as an alternative - the LF1 is very small with a 1/1.7" sensor, EVF and a 28-200 zoom. I'm very fond of my Lumix LX5 and hoped that the LF1 would be similar but offer a longer zoom range. However, I've been very...

    Advice Wanted Back to Compacts?

I would heartily agree that modern software transforms the files of compact cameras. Despite having many m4/3 options (including GM5, GX80 and EM1ii) and a few 1" cameras, I'm still drawn back to my first "serious compact" - a Lumix LX5. I purchased it in 2010 and still use it. For me, the...

We had a lovely walk on the South Downs Way in Sussex last week. I think the Stylus 1 did a great job with the pretty scenery.

    Olympus Olympus Stylus 1

I had a short holiday in Spain and took the Stylus 1. I've been using DxO Deep Prime recently to process my small sensor pictures and I find it does a very good job. Here's an example at 300mm :

And while I'm talking about DxO Deep Prime, here's an example on a 3200 ISO shot taken in darkness with the Olympus Stylus 1. The first is in Lightroom though I admit that my sharpening and noise reduction skills with the sliders are poor. and this is with default settings in DxO Deep Prime:

I'm still using the Stylus 1 though a new intermittent problem has appeared where "no card" is displayed. If I eject and reinsert the card it seems OK. I've tried a different card but the problem still occurs occasionally. The 300mm equivalent reach is very useful with wildlife. Here's a grab...

I was walking near Berwick Church in Sussex today and paid a visit. Parts of the church date back to the 12th century. Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant were members of the Bloomsbury group of artists, writers and intellectuals and settled nearby. They painted murals in the church in 1941...

A heron flew near me on a golf course yesterday. I powered-up, zoomed to 300mm and grabbed a few BIF shots. This was the best but all were a bit noisy at 400 ISO. I put it through Topaz Sharpen AI and cropped to this. It's not going to win any prizes but I was quite pleased for a grab with a...

    Olympus Olympus Stylus 1

I'm in the UK and would say that it isn't worth AUD$700 (approx £350). I got my mint example on ebay for about £180. As someone whose primary consideration is generally value, I thought that was a good price for a great optical package. However, a used FZ1000 is about £400 used and that is a...

Still having fun with the Stylus 1. Here's a panorama from earlier today. I got very wet shortly afterwards. The arch in the background is Wembley Stadium which is 19.8 miles away as the crow flies. The 300mm reach is quite useful. And here is a lovely old house that I stumbled across on a...

I really admire your forest shots as I generally have problems with such high contrast scenes. My only current complaint is that I can't display the level gauge and highlight blinkies at the...

    Olympus Olympus Stylus 1

Thanks for your kind words. As I said earlier, I do have plenty of "better quality" equipment (including m4/3, FZ1000, X100s.........) but I really enjoy the Stylus for its size and versatility. The 1/1.7" sensor is more than adequate in decent light and a f2.8 28-300mm lens is a bonus. The EVF...

    Olympus Olympus Stylus 1

It's raining today so this was through a window. A bit of Topaz noise reduction was needed, and I may have overdone it, but I'm still quite happy. Isn't it strange how some cameras just feel "right" in the hand ergonomically?

Despite having a variety of m4/3 gear, an RX100 and a FZ1000, I've recently fallen for the Stylus 1 superzoom. It was "as new" and cost £180 on ebay. I'm getting quite fond of the XF10 as a very portable, high-quality camera. I had to return it for dust spots on the sensor so we'll see if they reappear. However, for about £230, I think it's very good value.
