Sony How Big Are the Sony FE Lenses Really?

Nice comparison! The Sony A7 and A7r have reset the bar. In 2015 the FE lens lineup should fill out, and that's when I might jump ship from Canon FF.

    Steel Mill Portraits

My reply I tried to post earlier must have been eaten by the interwebs… Great work! I enjoy seeing these portraits where the subjects are placed within the context of their environment. On a technical level the tonality, clarity and sharpness are superb. Well done!

Finally did it - M43 in, Fuji out...

Ray -- it's a good move to go down a system. In effect you are running two systems. You have the two fixed lens cameras for your main setup, and M43 for when you need focal length flexibility. Have to other systems seems inefficient. This is not dissimilar to my Canon 5D3 with two lenses...

Sony Sony Breaks New Ground with A7 / A7R Announcement

It is the expected (stellar) results, since the sensor is likely the same silicon. A truly remarkable potential from a camera body the size of a larger M43 body.

Micro 4/3 Piedras Blancas Lighthouse, San Simeon, CA (GH3 + 17mm)

Thanks! The 17/1.8 is solid. I wish it were a sharpness and contrast monster like the Canon 35L, but it more than passes the bar for my needs.

Micro 4/3 Piedras Blancas Lighthouse, San Simeon, CA (GH3 + 17mm)

Thanks Miguel! I agree the 17 is a capable lens, and I find the snap focus very useful for night photography or when using ND filters for such landscapes. I just set it to infinity, and go to work. The iPhone app only works with Panasonic bodies with wifi. I believe only the latest ones have...

Micro 4/3 Piedras Blancas Lighthouse, San Simeon, CA (GH3 + 17mm)

The much maligned Oly 17mm paired with the undervalued GH3 (as a photographic tool)... plus some ND filters, a tripod, and the lumix iPhone app for wifi shutter release.

Micro 4/3 DPRs preview of the E-M1

Finally CA Correction! CA correction is about time! This should have been available sooner. The EM1 looks to be a winner. The jpeg engine, IBIS, weather sealing, speed, customizability, good lens selection, and okay (but not great) video, means it's a well-rounded camera useful for a...

    Micro 4/3 Smallest m43: Panasonic GM1+12-32 f/3.5-5.6 for 699 Euro

Looks super small. It's hard to see how it would work in real life, looking only at web pictures. This is definitely one of those cameras that one needs to see in person. I wonder how small the announced PanaLeica 15mm will be.

Sony Sony Breaks New Ground with A7 / A7R Announcement

I see! I am not familiar with the NEX mount -- I saw the TCS video, and they had adapters already, showing up a Canon EF to NEX mount with AF. Good stuff! I can see this as being a major plus for the format, primarily because there is no crop factor. FF mirrorless is going to be exciting...

Sony Sony Breaks New Ground with A7 / A7R Announcement

I thought the same thing. 36MP looks staggering on paper, but then when I think about how I'd actually process and use the files... I don't make giant prints, and even if the acuity, micro contrast, and detail increases are noticeable, when does that actually impact the power of the final...

Sony Sony Breaks New Ground with A7 / A7R Announcement

Exciting stuff! I applaud Sony for being bold with their camera designs. I hope they follow through with lenses to match the quality of the sensor. I assume an M adapter is on the way so that rangefinder refugees can use their lenses at their intended focal lengths.

Micro 4/3 35-100 at the Oceano Dunes

That's it. The hills are slanted, and there's no way for some shots to shoot perpendicular based on the shapes of the landscape. Maybe it's time for an M43 tilt-shift lens!?!?
  17. Stan

Micro 4/3 35-100 at the Oceano Dunes

It's almost certainly short DOF. The shapes are slanted and I was shooting close. I should stop down more! Thanks for noticing!

Sony Sony FF A7 and A7r

If it turns out to be real, then Sony will likely have a winner on their hands. The RX1 is a fine camera, and has amazing IQ. I think a ILC version with more lens options, plus built in EVF would likely be attractive to many people. Sony is innovating and pushing the boundaries, so I applaud...

More Dunes photos. It's fall, and the fog bank is staying away more often. Without fog there are opportunities for a low sun in the afternoon to hit the sand and highlight the shapes and a patterns. 35-100, GH3, LR5

Ricoh GR is making me feel like ditching the XE1

I also agree that the form factor is so important for thr GR to be a GR. The size and retractable lens (no lens cap) were the reasons why I picked one up.

Ricoh GR is making me feel like ditching the XE1

It may not be a GR vs XE1 issue as much as it is about having two (incomplete) mirrorless systems. If both mirrorless systems are incomplete (for you), and you are focal length limited, then I could see focusing on one system and getting more out of the single system.

Pentax Sand Dunes with the 7-14

Hey Ray! Yes, I used the 9-18 here in the past when I owned a copy. Recently I've been mainly using 35mm equivalent at the dunes, and decided to mix it up. 7mm really invites getting low and close to these rolling dunes. Fun! I had my back to the sun on most of the images. For the ones...

Pentax Sand Dunes with the 7-14

I sent a mule train back to the east with $ and treats, and a few days later I got hold of a Panny 7-14, which had been used for lots of great image. Now the lens has to make do with the wild, dry west :) The poor lens didn't know what it was in for... EPM2 and 7-14 (I had the 35-100 on the...

Micro 4/3 Quick comparison of GX7 and EP5

Nice write-up Ray! I think you hit on the main differences and more importantly the broad overlap of the two bodies. M43 has really matured, and it's great to see things like 1/8000th, faster flash sync, and IBIS from both Panny and Oly. Now that I have used M43 for a while, have a GR, and a...

    Micro 4/3 G5 or GX7?

I have a G5, EPM2, and GH3. I used to have GH2 and G1... The G5 sensor is good, and it can produce great images. Where the newer sensors are ahead are in dynamic range and high ISO. Whether this suits your needs is hard to say. If you do deep shadow pulls or shoot often in low light, then...

Micro 4/3 TCSTV GX7 Field Test

Micro 4/3 First Outing with the Panny 35-100

Thanks! Interesting that you mention the RX1. I also enjoy using a tele zoom like the 35-100 or a tele prime AND a 35mm equivalent wide. Just a nice 1-2 combo. So far I have been successful at resisting the RX1, and will go with the 17 + 25 + 35-100 for the regular kit, and I'll toss in an...

Micro 4/3 First Outing with the Panny 35-100

Thanks John! I'm thinking the same thing about portraits at 100mm. I have some shots from when I had the 45-200 at around 100mm and f4.8. The 45-200 is a decent lens for the price, and at 100mm made a pretty good portrait lens. The 35-100 will take it up a notch or two, and will be very...

Micro 4/3 First Outing with the Panny 35-100

It's all EntropicRemnant's fault that I now have the Panny 35-100 :) Anyways, I'm reinvesting in M43 after decreasing my gear for a while. M43 is still my favorite format -- I enjoy the cameras, the newer sensors are solid, and the lenses are fantastic. The 35-100 in particular is...

    Micro 4/3 Ming Thein's review of Olympus OM-D E-M1

Regarding body size of the EM1 (GH3). The advantage of M43 as a system is that you can have a small rangefinder and a small DSLR sized camera for different needs/objectives with a single lens system. The lenses are smaller and video optimized. So there is a (broad) niche that M43 satisfies...

    Micro 4/3 EPM2/EPL5 + 14mm/2.5 vs Nikon A vs Ricoh GR

This is why I picked up the GR. It's just always there, so I use it more and more. Love the 35mm crop mode -- the only thing I'd trade the GR for is a 35mm eq. version. 35mm is my favorite focal length. In my small and light kit with Domke FX5B, I can stuff a couple of lenses, a PEN, a GR...

    Micro 4/3 EPM2/EPL5 + 14mm/2.5 vs Nikon A vs Ricoh GR

I had a moment of weakness a couple weeks ago, and picked up a GR. I couldn't help it... The GR is great. The EPM2/EPL5 with 14mm is also great. I use the GR as my P&S (and plan to use it for serious hike/street/candids), and find the small size really useful. It's also pleasant not having...
