    Birds Show Birds

Not to be too species-pedantic Luis, but while that is a nice bird and well-shot, it is not a blue jay. Closer to a grey jay, but not that either - without knowing where you are shooting its hard to offer any better id. THIS - is a blue jay... !

    Nikon Nikon DL series

Wow, that is something we don't see often. But I suppose that is the risk when established players stay out of a new sector for too long - it can become too hard to elbow your way back in. Wonder how long Canon will persist with the EOS M?

    London Protest

These are very tense images - a lot of, lets say, very engaged people here. I get claustrophobia just viewing, let alone being in this crowd shooting with close lenses.

Micro 4/3 Micro 4/3 macro with Oly 60mm

And one more example, with a crop: Tide pool view; with a tiny (15mm or so) crab poking out...original shot from a metre or so away - the 120mm equivalent FL of this lens helps in not needing to get quite so close. And a 1:1 crop of the crab (well, it is when posted...SC site will re-size a...

Micro 4/3 Micro 4/3 macro with Oly 60mm

Noticed a few people on other threads mentioning the Olympus 60mm f2.8 macro lens - I have had the Oly 60 lens for a while now but not shot much with it (bought when local temps about -28C, not ideal for patient outdoor close focus), so now in temporarily warm place, I am doing more close range...

Micro 4/3 OMD EM5 owner purchases OMD EM5 II – impressions so far

Thanks Jock for reporting your experiences... I too now have both EM5 bodies, with the mark II usually attached to my Oly 100-300 zoom for birding use, and the original with either the 60 macro or 12 prime. A great walk around package I intend to use most days on my current down under stay.

    Birds Show Birds

I agree with this view Bill, but nonetheless have sold off my Pentax gear including its excellent long lens. My "compromise" now (used in the above waxwing shot) is m4/3, so far with the Oly 75-300 - compromise some final shot quality for halving the weight. The m4/3 admittedly does not get to...

    Birds Show Birds

One of our "signs of spring" birds in northern latitudes.... cedar waxwing (the other noisy 40 or so did not fit into the frame!). Very hard to shoot as in their excitable spring flocks, they stay in one position for a maximum of 2 seconds.

    Birds Show Birds

And last from Costa Rica, a gorgeous bird: Turquoise browed Motmot. For the Aussies in the group, this is a colourful kookaburra sized bird with two vastly extended tail feathers. Not quite as common as the kookaburra though... it is amazing how these bright colours disappear into a dappled...

    Micro 4/3 Micro 4/3 samples

Always enjoy everyone's 4/3 contributions; though I've been delinquent of late. I just had a look at comparing shots taken with my 3 lenses (Oly12, PanaLeica25, Pan40-150) and what it highlighted is how 4/3 seems a bit more influenced by lens quality than larger formats. When I select just the...

    Tripods Image stabilisation and tripods.

My only real stabilized camera is my EM-5; I have always turned off IBIS on the tripod if only for better battery life. I've been reading a bit about the experiences of the early adopters of the new Sony stabilized A series (eg. A7 ii and Rii - don't have one yet but GAS could go there....)...

Maps... or my fascination with mapping photos

I enjoy tweaking my images as much as anyone in LR, but over the past couple of years I have to admit one of my most enjoyable photo processing / management tasks has been spatially locating my photos with GPS, and using Lightroom's map module to visually display the images in map space. I am...

News Leica Q Type 116 Leaked Image, Specs

Archiver: very well articulated debate (with self!). A few observations, least important first: - file size etc is a red herring; storage gets cheaper as fast as needs go up - just dont worry about it. - focus differences: IMO all part of the rangefinder / mirrorless differences set, each has...

    New 5k iMac

@Pixl10 - Lightroom can have the catalog files anywhere, but I would advise you keep the catalog (i.e. database file), and the previews file that accompanies it, on your fastest drive, that would be the SSD on the iMac if you go that way. This will give much faster response on opening LR and...

    New 5k iMac

I upgraded my iMac last year, big screen for great Lightroom ease of use. I went with SSD on board and use a LaCie 2big 6 GB Thunderbolt drive as the main external. All apps including LR run fast from the SSD, as for photos I keep this years photos on the SSD and all others/archive on the...

Sony Sony A7 II w/ 5-axis IBIS from Olympus

Ah, OK that makes more sense. Still seems a bit like these A7 cameras are proof-of-concept for Sony; the pro line Serhan linked to may indeed be the one that pulls the pieces together in a more coherent manner... what we always say of course about future cameras....

Sony Sony A7 II w/ 5-axis IBIS from Olympus

Perhaps a small point for some, but for those initially attracted to Sony for the "compact & light" aspect, it looks from initial reports, like the 7ii is a chunk heavier than the 7 (600g vs 465g), presumably the complexity of the 5-axis system? This starts to creep pretty close to the weight...

    Distance

I've noticed you often shoot wide open (eg your Charlie series) so with minimal DOF it makes sense that missed focus could eliminate some shots, especially with your lovely full framer cameras. But if you can't abide the time to generate full size previews, that is a conundrum. I get the...

B&W The Real Silver Effex Thread and Gallery is now online.

This thread encourages me to keep experimenting in B&W, not my native way of seeing the world, but fun.... this is an EM5 shot from a very large (1900 km2) area of dunes that disrupts the normal wheat and canola fields in SW Saskatchewan. As a side note on using Silver Efex software, I must...

Have you ever had a problem caused by the interchangeable lens feature of your camera?

Worth noting as well, on interchangeable lenses, that you can benefit from the flexibility without ever "changing a lens in the field". I tend to never do this, but almost always change a lens once I am back home/motel/tent wherever it is calm and more dust free; the concept is to go walking...
