You don't know you need it until you have it :)
There is a drawback with 42mp in that you need slightly more technique to be sharper at the pixel level, but when it works it's tremendous
I do agree with you about the M8 and to a certain extent the M9. They had a contrast fall off that was very...
Late to this thread :)
I think there is a common misconception when going to higher resolution. I know that Canon 5D users complained about the Mark ii being less sharp and poppy, the Nikon D700 users complained about the D800 and the Leica M9 users complained about the 240.
Essentially the...
Its correct and right to point out that Sony does indeed update firmware.
However it tends to do so for bug fixes. Very occasionally for new functionality but it tends to focus its R&D on a product as a whole rather then split its R&D too much between old and yet-to-be-released products
Its...
Ray, you seem to prefer the Canon
Is there anything specific that you can point to in handling ?
I have looked at both and the Sony seems nicer and more refined
The Canon just seems to be thrown into an S120 body with a long lens added (aka RX100 version i), but since its soft at the long end...
Just an update
I sold the GM1. Just couldn't get on with two things, the handling, particularly the design of the touch screen (terribly annoying, always moving focus point by mistake) and the DR - once used to Sony, difficult to change.
I have pre-ordered the RX100 III - fingers crossed

I also bought the Nikon Df. The Nikon f1.8G range is fabulous. However I just couldn't get on with the size of the DSLR again.
The RX1 is really fabulous.
So many years on and there is still nothing to compete with 35mm f2, pocket size and silent shutter with the most fabulous IQ.
I am camped...
many thanks all
I have gone for the GM1 as I actually bought one cheaper then a RX100 ii and it seems to have more possibilities
I also liked the manual zoom. Better for speed of operation and also subtlety in certain environments.
Interestingly the RX100 is slightly more pocketable then the...
Deciding between these two cameras. I want something pocket sized and silent (i.e. electronic shutter) with some zoom range
Interchangeable lenses is nice but not a decider. I am more interested in IQ.
So far I see that the GM1 has a 0.5 stop noise advantage and the RX100 has a 0.7 stop...
Its a question of whether you buy cameras on specs or results
The X-vario results can't be argued with. Really spectacular across colours, pop (whatever that is) and sharpness then anything I have seen from a Fuji zoom, for example. And quite unusual to have that across 28-70mm and at all...
My goodness Ray
Never tagged you for a Dfer!!
I am using an A7 with glee but have a RX1 for those silent, subtle light moments that no other camera really hits the spot for.
I have given up on the idea of one camera for everything!
Nice
I have been trying to capture Canary Wharf Jubilee station for years but have not managed a good one overall. I think I will need to go superwide!
I have some more narrow pictures from that station, e.g.
Descent
I have even been crazy enough to use film in a station (M6):
Kings Cross...
I would personally change the music, something slower, sadder and a bit demonic. It sounded more like a promotional video.
Some of the pictures and video are really strong. Great work!
Looking at work like Vivian Maier's is enjoyable.
I realised as I looked through that, perhaps to people at the time, although well framed, they might have had similar reactions to "street" today., but looking back they are a lovely record of life in that era.
I guess in 100 years folk will...
thanks interesting perspective.
Increasing picture quality comes with increasing work, but I love that and the RX1 would be, and is, my choice.
The Ricoh looks amazing value for money though, very nice pictures, and the Nikon is surprising good, although it does start to have the "compact"...
your pictures give me the sinking feeling I am stuck on the train coming home
I love the one with the people extending their arms in the same way.
The RX1(R) is a unique proposition that compliments interchangeable solutions.
No interchangeable solution of the same quality is likely to ever come near to its size.
Its "silent" shooting nature is also unique, although in the future that gap could be closed by the A7.1 !!!!
Lastly, there are...
Street is a funny thing. Everyone has different definitions. I like to have pictures of people doing their regular things but in a place context. e.g. an interesting landmark, or a flower seller in his stall, e.g.:
Some people call really gritty portraits street, I don't...
Well I like took this picture into the sun without a hood like an idiot:
Original
and a bit of fiddling later with LivingRoom did this:
Fiddled
I read somewhere this has to do with the SNR (silly nerd ratio)
More technical reviews of the best camera in the world to come
best rgds
Sony's "I've got no time for Canikon" ASA 400, which is a development of the Sony's original classic Trinitron emulsion "I do it my way" ASA 100
:dance2:
Cheers, I'm starting up my own review business. If the camera lasts more then one day it passes :D
This is walking from Greenwich to North Greenwich along the Thames. The whole place is a wasteland with a massive aggregate depot.
20 years and it'll all be luxury flats ..
Its REALLY sharp
and beautiful, and well made, and, well, lovely colours, really small and light weight, and, oh yes, its mostly black, except for a red R
umm, that's it
This is from the first roll of film I put through:
Abandoned docks
Rubbish
Nando Mambo...
I can say thats its pretty rock solid vs some other cameras I could mention.
jloden I haven't seen that issue raised elsewhere to be frank but it sounds occasionally useful
depreciation matters less the longer you use something
if you use for 2 years and loose £500 per year that could be quite acceptable.
the good news about the RX1(R) is that it is quite unique. Its unlikely that you will rush to change it. The shutter is silent, the detail is massive, the...
To be honest with RAW files this good to work with it's all splitting hairs.
I would go with the Nex here.
If I was rich enough I would take both.
If I never wanted to change lens it would be a harder decision.
Both cameras demonstrate the quality if Sony's camera division these days.
For many years in my photo hobby I have striven for higher and higher clarity. After using Leica M extensively and the wonderful D800E I have now settled on a sony RX1 for most of my needs, a Fuji X-E1 for portrait and a canon EOS 3 for mucking around with film.
I was in costco this weekend...
