Phones It often catches my eye just how engaged we are with our phones - they create our space, our own world. (I'm also enjoying that wide 28mm view of the world).

Nikon Showcase Nikon Coolpix A Image Thread

Modern day Nikon S, or modern day Nikon mess? (It was US$16.80 including shipping, but I had to buy without knowing how it might look. Easily removable. Adds some grip to ergonomics, but... does it look silly, or classic?)

Comparison Test - Ricoh GR, Nikon Coolpix A, Sony RX100

Thanks for taking the time to share that Ray. Yes, I was quick to get to grips with the Coolpix A settings, though that works both ways - a few things were missing, and I am used to more dedicated dial controls for navigation. The D800 is a super camera, but I find I only take it out when I am...

Comparison Test - Ricoh GR, Nikon Coolpix A, Sony RX100

wt21 - the D800 shows it close to how it was to my eyes. The sunset was striking enough for me to dash for the camera. This image - with the D800/105-2.5 was taken 4 minutes before the trio of compacts.

Comparison Test - Ricoh GR, Nikon Coolpix A, Sony RX100

...and finally, here is how my D800 read the light with a Nikon 105mm f/2.5 AI-S attached, stopped down to f/5.6 and shot in aperture priority - D800 selected 1/30 second at ISO 1600. This was about 4 minutes prior to the other three shots with the compacts. Image resized, but no cropping or...

Comparison Test - Ricoh GR, Nikon Coolpix A, Sony RX100

Okay, same view this evening in the last few minutes of light - lovely weather here in Hong Kong these days. Hot, for sure, but blue skies mean a little less mugginess, and there have been some nice breezes. This time - to get them all super quick, I just grabbed the cameras and shot in auto...

Ricoh The Ricoh GR image thread

These are really very good! I like the way the first shot contrasts cool and warm light to "draw you inside" - fantastic. Great use of light in all of them. I like the textures in the second one, and the juxtaposition of old and new with the glass towers in the background. I was in Melbourne in...

    Sony Showcase Rx100 images

Thanks for that. I didn't know about the sunny weather option. Some of my shots were taken in intense midday sun - 35+ degrees celcius, and lots of people carrying umbrellas to fend off the sun! Suddenly I realise the value of an OVF/EVF (vII will solve that), as I simply couldn't see. I shot...

Comparison Test - Ricoh GR, Nikon Coolpix A, Sony RX100

I guess that is the cost of this endeavour. It was impossible for me to get to spend hands on time with either before deciding. So far, I am really impressed with both. It will be several weeks if not months in the field before I know which I prefer, and as I've said in a previous post, I...

Ricoh The Ricoh GR image thread

On the way home tonight I passed these kids having a break in a 'cone of silence' at KFC. I'm loving having this camera in my pocket, ready for moments like this!

Comparison Test - Ricoh GR, Nikon Coolpix A, Sony RX100

Too hard to call it, though the A and the GR were less than a minute apart. I'd say the RX100 - which I struggled to navigate to get matching settings - suffered by comparison being 4 minutes after the first two. But the 'rendering' of the A and the GR above does also seem consistent with what I...

Comparison Test - Ricoh GR, Nikon Coolpix A, Sony RX100

I'll begin with a big caveat - I know nothing about setting up proper tests, or professionally reviewing cameras. I'm also new to this forum (and photography forums in general), so perhaps there is also some form required for this and I am well wide of it. But in any case, I thought this might...

    Sony Showcase Rx100 images

When I bought the Coolpx A on Wednesday, I also bought the RX100 - some redundancy yes, but quite different strengths. On my way to an appointment in Hong Kong today, the sun was high and beating down hard. A lot of people out and about with umbrellas (common here in summer to protect against...

Nikon Showcase Nikon Coolpix A Image Thread

Tonight's snap on the escalator a to an ice dinner in Mid-Levels, Hong Kong. I'm getting to grips with the controls here. I set this to shutter priority, 1/80th, with auto-iso capped at 3200. The camera chose f/2.8 and iso-2000, which would seem to suggest it likes wide open over higher ISO...

Nikon Why I bought the Coolpix A today

I agree with both points Archiver. With the OVF dismounted, the camera looks handsome close up, but discrete in the way you describe from a distance. I never felt comfortable shoving my D800 in someone's face or even direction. Too journalist/paparazzi looking. The silver camera signals -...

Nikon Why I bought the Coolpix A today

This is so true. When we are buying gear we study the choices and choose carefully - these things are not cheap. In the end though its mostly the IQ in the brain rather than the lens-sensor-processor-pp that makes the picture. I will do my best!

Nikon Why I bought the Coolpix A today

Yes, without the OVF in the jeans pocket - it would fit at a pinch but the potential to mangle the hotshoe and scratch up the OVF puts me off.

Nikon Why I bought the Coolpix A today

When I got home with the camera, I took it out of the box and took this photo without checking / changing any settings. Literally point and shoot Jpeg. No editing (except size here): The fuller file can be found at: First Coolpix A snap | Flickr - Photo Sharing! It is not a masterpiece I...

Nikon Why I bought the Coolpix A today

It seems from all I read leading to today's purchase that 90% will buy the Ricoh GR. I don't blame you/them - it seems to be "better" in many respects - size, weight, customisation, after sales firmware updates reputation, the 'cool' factor, one-handed ergonomics, that snap focus thingy... I...

Greetings from Hong Kong... (and a squitous route to compacts)

Hello, I found this great forum - as many do - via a Google search while researching options for a serious compact. Not only did I get valuable information here, but it was immediately apparent - at least from the thread I read - that this is a very civil and welcoming, encouraging forum...
