Currently on a week vacation in the north of Brittany. Not far from where we are staying is the small village of Hede. The Rance Canal runs past the village and has 11 locks in the space of about 1/2 a mile. Each of the locks has a lock keepers house.....substantial ones at that. The locks don't seem to be too busy so I am not sure what the keepers do all day. All in all, a very pleasant walk topped off with a fine lunch at a local creperie (a glass of Rose Cider, a Gallette Forestiere, dessert and coffee for ......35 euros for both of us! How good is that?

the word idyllic springs to mind. I think I could live there....away from the throngs of people in the city. I older I get, the more secluded I want to be.

+1000! I wonder if I can talk my wife into letting me take early retirement, then we move to Brittany and I become a lock keeper?

Nice photos, too, Pete. Figured I might want to throw that in there. ;)

If the situation in France is the same as here, I imagine most of those lock-keepers houses have been sold off as private dwellings or holiday lets. I don't believe that each lock needs its own keeper when they are so closely bunched anyway.
