There has been some discussion about the want (or need) for a separate forum for superzoom cameras. I understand the viewpoints both for and against. Amin has also expressed to me that he really has no preference.

So I have created a poll to measure the interest from everyone here. The poll results will be used to inform the final decision.

Thanks for taking the time to vote and/or voice your interest or concerns.

And thanks to you as well, for taking the time to create the poll and give us a voice :).

It seems to me that most people look in the threads which interest them and don't participate in those which don't, I have several cameras, and will participate in threads for those, and also in threads relating to cameras which may be on a wishlist. But because there are already so many threads, I do not have time to read everything. I doubt that anyone does. I definitely prefer the superzoom threads *not* to become lost in amongst all the others.

I'm not in favour of specialist forums in general
they have their uses but by & large its better to have exposure to a mixed bag of tricks
I don't often visit the Leica forum or the M43 etc - my loss, but if we have more diversity here it helps maintain a better balance

Roger, to be clear, this would not be a new forum (as in a website), but rather a new sub-forum. I have never used the Forums as my navigational point, so it doesn't affect me at all. I only use the recent discussions sidebar to navigate. Anything older than that doesn't show up on my radar, but I'm here often enough to do that.

So if the decision is made that there is a benefit to keeping superzoom discussions out of their current spots (which is in either of these two sections.....
Fixed-Lens Cameras - Sensor Size 1" or Larger or
Fixed-Lens Cameras - Sensor Size < 1" )......... then they will end up with a new Subforum located here.... Cameraderie under the
Other Gear Talk banner (since one can't group them all together by sensor size).

:coffee-79: I just read the recent discussions, don't really dig much deeper. Slightly off topic, I do miss the PAD and weekly photo challenges, and the podcasts.

Bring back the Podcasts. I'd like a weekly Ray and Amin view on the world of photography! (Pweez)

Luke - I understood that but perhaps I'm in the minority of not giving too much weight to the equipment used provided I like the images shown.
I don't think compartmentisation is the way forward for this forum

The subject matter for superzooms is so different that I think a separate subforum would be good. Trying to think now of the actual subject matter - birds and small animals at distance mostly - but anyway that's what it comes down to for me - i.e. usually something like "superzoom" is camera-related and something like "birds" is photo-related, so I don't know whether I would look for images on the superzoom subforum or look under nature and birds etc., or just stick to the latest posts on the sidebar. The great thing about the sidebar is it's not only the latest posts, but exposes me to a variety of images, cultures, articles etc.

As a superzoomer myself, I think it would be useful to have one place where information about superzooms (and perhaps other long-reach camera/lens combos) could be aggregated. There seem to be more and better versions coming out.

As a matter of course, I usually check "New Posts" to see if there is anything that interests me.

Cheers, Jock

I use the sidebar, and the new posts tab, but occasionally also Forums. And in doing that I note that some of the existing forums have nearly no activity at all (casio?).

I'd like to see a superzoom category in "Other gear" and as usual of course we would be posting many photos in the Images threads. I'm someone who will always have one or more superzoom cameras... (currently I'm on three, because I still have my elderly C760uz which zooms to 300mm equ. as well as the new Nikon and the middle aged Panny FZ100)

I generally agree with that, except that if you are starting a thread yourself you need to navigate your way to the correct sub-forum first. Also, if you are looking for something posted a while back, you need to be hunting in the right place unless you can find it by searching key words.

Karen, sorry to disappoint, but I barely have a view at all of the world of photography anymore, let alone a weekly one! I've had my two most used cameras for more than a year (Coolpix A 2 1/2, DF over a year, and the G7X about 9 months). I've kind of lost interest in the new gear. So I wouldn't be much use in a podcast, let alone a weekly one!

There is a new subforum called Superzoom Salon that is now open. You will find it under the "Other Gear Talk" forum. I reckon Jock will bookmark it and make that his entry point to the website. :D

Superzoom Salon

I have begun moving threads over there already. The only thing I am really unclear about is what all should be over there. For sure all the "big black blobs" that look like mini-DSLRs will go over there. What about the Stylus 1? How about the little jacket pocket rockets? Should a threshold of 200mm equivalent be the minimum. Initially I thought it should be 300mm, but that would rule out the RX10 which is very definitely a bridge camera.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.

Wow, this is great! Thanks, Luke.

I would think 300mm, but I have no objection to the RX10. Certainly the FZ150, FZ200, FZ1000 . . . how about we ask folks to nominate their cameras that they think should be included?

Again, thanks!

Cheers, Jock

I'd say anything that qualifies as a "bridge camera". The DSLR lookalikes with fixed lenses. I am not going to be upset if my TZ60 is not included. Even though it has a 30x zoom (720mm equiv) I don't regard it in the same way as a superzoom. Others may disagree and want theirs included. I'll go along with the crowd on that one.

Don't forget the older ones, Jock. I'd be a wee bit upset if my FZ100 was excluded, also my C760uz. However... I'm happy to let them go, but any new shots will be posted in the new forum.

I had a brief play with the Stylus 1 last week - very impressed & would like to see more images taken with it

Oh gosh - now I will *have to* buy the G3x just so I can play in the new subforum.
